Addressing the growing demand for student accommodation in Belfast, Queen’s University Belfast is ready to invest up to £100m in building new student housing. Furthermore, the university will invest this substantial amount in four years to construct a new facility.
Additionally, Belfast currently has around 45,000 full-time students. These students are from the third level of education and hence, most of them need accommodation. This also encompasses international students who will need accommodation.
Need for Student Accommodations in Belfast
Considering the rising number of students each year, it is estimated that Queen’s University alone will require approximately 3,000 rooms within the next 4 years. Also, as students mostly prefer university accommodations in the UK, the institutions are considering an expansion of their student housing.
As per Queen University reports, there is a 5℅ increase in the applications for student accommodations within a year. There is a need for high-quality, affordable and safe options for students near their university.
Details of the Accommodation
The university has sought three new sites for building the planned accommodation. These will be at Dublin Road, Laganbank and Brunswick Street. This will give them easy access and a sense of security and assurance. The construction of the accommodation facility will first begin on the Dublin Road site.
The area has a capacity of 400+ rooms for the students apart from a central and close location. The decision to build the student facility is final however, details as to when the construction will begin are yet to be disclosed. This housing will help the university meet the rising demand for housing in Belfast while also helping students attain affordable and decent housing options.
