Students from South Africa and Botswana will now require to obtain student visas to enter into Ireland. Ireland introduced visa requirements for all nationals of South Africa and Botswana on 10th July, 2024.
An announcement issued by the Irish Minister for Justice Helen McEntee earlier this month said that all nationals of South Africa and Botswana will no longer be permitted visa free entry to the country including students.

This change has raised concerns among nationals of the two countries and organisations supporting students. They said that the last minute change is very overwhelming and is causing unnecessary stress for students who will soon start their academic year in Ireland. Students who were unable to make travel arrangements to enter Ireland before the new visa measure entered into force, they will now have to undergo visa procedures.

The Irish embassy in South Africa takes around 4 weeks to process the applications. On the other hand, some applicants have complained that it is taking longer time to receive a response. The decision to introduce visas for both nationals of South Africa and Botswana came after the Ireland registered an increase in asylum applications filed by these two nationalities.
