As of March 2023, 113 universities in Kazakhstan were home to 28,169 overseas students in Kazakhstan. The Study in Kazakhstan platform disseminates details about the country’s international students’ educational options. In recent years, students have been more prevalent from Russia, the United States, Middle Eastern Nations and African Nations. At the Kazakh Ministry of Science and Higher Education, a scholarship programme will begin for overseas students. This programme will include those of Kazakh nationality who are not residents of Kazakhstan. This programme will begin on 30th March 2023. According to the Kazakh Ministry of Education and Science, 30,000 overseas students from countries like the United States, Africa, Russia, and the Middle East are currently enrolled at universities around Kazakhstan. According to the government, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was home to almost 64% of all pupils.
Among the 30,000 overseas students enrolled in Kazakh colleges. These students are from the United States, Africa, Russia, and the Middle East. In Kazakhstan, there were 21,727 overseas students in Kazakhstan, in 2018, 39,558 in 2019, and 29,069 in 2020. Universities use special education scholarships to entice overseas students to pursue higher education in Kazakhstan.
According to Adlet Toibayev, Head of the Higher and Postgraduate Education Department of the Ministry of Education and Science, local institutions take part in international education fairs. This is done to help foreigners understand more about education in Kazakhstan.
Additionally, celebrations honouring Kazakhstan’s educational achievements were planned for November in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and Tashkent. Also, special education scholarships are used by universities to lure overseas students to pursue higher education in Kazakhstan.
Among international students, common majors include medicine, educational sciences, business, management and law, social sciences, and others. In order to promote the Kazakh national education system abroad, the government is taking initiative. The government is providing scholarship programmes for overseas students and Kazakhs who are not citizens.

89 foreign nationals with excellent academic records were given a chance to study for free. This opportunity was given at regional institutions during the program’s first year of operation. In all levels of higher and postgraduate education, the government awarded 240 grants in 2021, a 2.5-fold increase.
As a result, 14 Kazakhstani universities are listed in the QS World University Rankings 2022. Also, three universities are listed in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022. In the meantime, Kazakhstan’s universities have been steadily raising their international standing. Moreover, overseas students in Kazakhstan, are provided with excellent opportunities.
