Study Abroad: GMI Construction Group Commences Work on Student Accommodation in York

GMI Construction Group has reportedly started working on a 303-bed student accommodation. This work is happening on James Street, York

This construction group is awarding a £22m (INR 2,27,57,92,200) contract to construct the building after York-based S Harrison Developments secured planning consent for student use in 2022. 

The project has already begun. This is happening after a forward funding deal was an idea by the developer with the Singapore-based Q Investment Partners (QIP).

This ongoing project is to complete in spring 2025. By building this project, hopefully, the issue of shortage of student accommodation will resolve. Also, there is a shortage of purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) in the city. 

A complete analysis of the rental markets of the top 50 UK universities took place. It is to take note that New York has the highest demand for PBSA in the country. 

About the New Project

The new project is located just off Lawrence Street. Furthermore, this location is very close to both the University of York and York St John University.

The four-storey building will consist of 108 studio rooms along with 195 cluster bedrooms. All of this will include shared living and dining rooms.

This new site is home to an accident repair centre operated by Alton Cars. Moreover, the site has moved to larger 22,000 sq. ft premises at The Airfield Industrial Estate, Elvington.

After the completion of this project, the building is to be taken care of by the Ptudent Living brand of Homes for Students. Students will start moving into this new accommodation from the start of the 2025 academic year.

Andrew Hurcomb, GMI’s Divisional Managing Director, Yorkshire has given his comment. He has stated that the James Street development is an ideal location. This place is within walking distance of two universities. 

Finally, this place will be known as the top study destination. This will take place by expanding several quality facilities which students will get.
