Study Abroad: From PM Modi to Coventry VC Leaders Brace Environmental Policies at COP28

COP 28 is an environmental conference organised by the UN to discuss climate change. Membership from almost every country worldwide can be seen as the conference began 2 days back. Leaders from around the world come together every year to discuss the climate crisis.

This year the conference is hosted by the United Arab Emirates in Dubai. It started on the 30th of November 2023 and will continue till the 12th of December 2023. It is just two days into the conference and the leaders are already making progress with their discussions on battling the climate crisis. 

The urgent matters at hand being discussed are the following; 

  • To limit the global temperature rise to 1.5°C. 
  • Also, to help the vulnerable communities in adapting to the effects of climate change
  • And achieve the target of net-zero emissions by the year 2050.

World Leaders at COP 28 

This summit is a pivotal time for world leaders to address climate issues and put forth their commitment towards environmental sustainability. More than 70,000 delegates are attending COP 28 which includes the leaders of the member states, business leaders, youth, climate scientists, indigenous people, journalists, as well as experts and stakeholders. 

Moreover, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appreciated and welcomed our Prime Minister’s Green Credit Initiative. Thus the conference so far has been a great progress for India in discussing climate change and associating with world leaders to combat the crisis that we are facing today. 

The Youth and Climate Change

The UN has invited youth to the conference to contribute young ideas. This will also help them participate in building a world that will soon be led by them. Moreover, the UN also invited many universities to discuss ways of sustainable development. 

On the 4 December, the VC of Coventry University will talk about how today’s youth can make a real difference in the global climate. The Vice-Chancellor will speak at the event organised to achieve concrete actions and solutions through education. Furthermore, this event will empower youth to ‘Become Climate Action Change Agents’. 

Institutes such as Arizona State University, De Montfort University, Michigan Technological University, Monash University, Stockholm University, George Washington University and the University of Maryland also participated in the conference. This is to make their students participate in environmental discussions.
