Aim of Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA)

The aim of SINGA is to invite students from diverse backgrounds and with this help Singapore in becoming the talent hub of science and technology. SINGA enables the brightest minds from all over the world to pursue their doctoral education in the world-class institutes of Singapore namely Nanyang Technological University, the National University of Singapore and the Singapore University of Technology. 

Moreover, through this program students will learn to co-exist in a multicultural society and diverse environment and build global networks. Students will get the real-life experience of how the smallest countries can be made economically and socially rich and empowered. Students will also get a chance to explore and know more about the economic, cultural, educational, social and political aspects of the country.

Eligibility Criteria for Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA)

SINGA is a unique program as it enables students to pursue their PhD programs directly after completing the bachelor’s program. Also, there is no compulsion that students who have completed their master’s cannot apply. Instead, the program enables students with master’s degrees to pursue a PhD with the exemption of a few courses which the students with a bachelor’s degree would have to study to complete their PhD. Apart from this provision, the following are the eligibility criteria to avail of this award:

  • To apply for this award, the candidate must be an international student
  • The applicant must demonstrate an excellent academic record
  • The candidate must have completed their bachelor’s degree
  • The candidate must demonstrate  proficiency in the English language
  • SINGA does not specifically need an English language proficiency certificate as they can assess the proficiency during the interview round. However, the certificate could be a language requirement for individual universities
  • The candidate wishing to apply for the master’s degree are not eligible to apply for this 
  • SINGA does not allow Singapore nationals and the candidate who have already completed their tertiary education to apply for the award 
  • Candidates who want to pursue PhD in science and engineering only are eligible to apply for it 
  • Applicants who wish to pursue social science or humanities courses are not eligible to apply for this award 

Documents Required 

The following are the documents required to apply for this award:

  • A copy of a valid passport
  • Passport-size photographs in a PNG or JPG format
  • Academic transcripts (in the English language)
  • Two letters of recommendation (referees are required to submit them online)
  • English language proficiency certificate (if required for specific universities)

How to Apply for Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA)?

The following are the steps to apply for this award:

  • The candidate must keep all the required documents handy for the online application 
  • Browse the projects from “Go to Research Areas” and select the research projects from there
  • The referees would be required to send the reference letters directly to SINGA
  • The application process will only begin once the letters of reference are received 
  • Candidates would be required to upload documents on the online application portal 
  • If a candidate is applying through the SINGA portal they are not required to apply separately at each university portal 
  • Try to submit your application at least two weeks before the deadline as once the application is submitted, referees would be required to submit their Letters within 7 days 
  • Candidates would be required to give a brief bout their research proposal in the application form
  • The candidate is allowed to submit more than one but upto three research proposals
  • The applicant need not contact the supervisor to apply for SINGA
  • The candidate can apply for any field of interest to pursue PhD and have no compulsion to pursue the major in a bachelor

Benefits of the Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA)

The following are the benefits of this program:

  • This award would cover the full tuition fees of the awardees
  • Students will get a monthly stipend of SGD 2000 (INR 1.22 Lakh)
  • Once the candidate qualifies for the first examination, the monthly stipend would increase to SGD 2500 (INR 1.53 Lakh)
  • Students will get a one-time airfare grant of up to SGD 1,500 (INR 91,940)
  • Students will also get a one-time settlement grant of SGD 1000 (INR 61293)
  • SINGA will also provide a settling-in allowance of up to SGD 1000 (INR 61293)
