This crisis has affected individuals across all age groups, but the nature and intensity of these challenges vary significantly.
Young people, in particular, have borne a disproportionate burden. Adolescence is a period of significant social and emotional development, and the isolation imposed by lockdowns and social distancing measures has disrupted this critical phase. Many young people experienced heightened anxiety, depression, and loneliness as they were deprived of in-person interactions with peers and the routines of school. Academic pressures compounded by remote learning further exacerbated mental health challenges.
At the opposite end of the age spectrum, older adults have also faced unique mental health strains. Social isolation, a common concern among this demographic even before the pandemic, was intensified. The loss of loved ones due to COVID-19, coupled with restrictions on visitations in care facilities, led to profound grief and loneliness. Fear of infection and economic uncertainty added to the stress experienced by many older adults.
