The National Medical Commission Updated Guidelines For MBBS Abroad

The National Medical Commission, which was earlier known as the Medical Council of India, is considered India’s supreme regulatory body for students who want to pursue medical education. India’s medical studies are considered top-notch; however, there has been a recent trend among students to pursue the MBBS degree abroad. New Guidelines By NMC

There are several steps that are to be followed by a student when he or she wants to pursue an MBBS degree abroad, some of which are as follows:

• Screening Test: Indian students who want to pursue an MBBS degree abroad have to qualify for the National Eligibility Test, which is conducted by NMC and is a mandatory entrance test for every medical aspirant in the country. Even students who want to study abroad must pass the NEET exam to get admission to any foreign medical institute.
• Eligibility: There are some eligibility criteria that a student should fulfill in order to get admission into an MBBS program abroad. First of all, the candidate should be 17 years old. Apart from this, the student must have passed 10+2 education with compulsory subjects including physics, chemistry, biology, and English with a minimum of 50 percent marks.
• Recognized Institutions: NMC, under the new guidelines, has advised students to select an institution that is recognized by NMC in India.
• FMGE Screening: After an Indian student has completed their MBBS degree abroad, they are also required to pass the FMGE screening test if they want to practice medicine in India, students are also required to take an equal license examination.

Admission Procedure

A set of procedures are put in place by NMC to attain admission to a foreign university:

• Students are required to apply directly to the university or college of their choice and follow every regulation before applying.
• Students should do thorough research before applying, taking into consideration that the universities are accredited with the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Important Points By NMC

Other than these guidelines, there are some other important points put forward by NMC for students abroad:

• The MBBS program abroad should last at least 54 months, which also includes an internship lasting at least 12 months.
• Subjects like General Medicine, Community Medicine, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Anaesthesia General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Otorhinolaryngology, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Emergency or Casualty services, lab services, and related sub-specialties are essential for students to cover.
• Every MBBS training program should match the standards of the Indian MBBS course.
