Indian American Professor and Researcher CR Rao Dies at the Age of 102

After spending years as an award-winning mathematician and statistician, Dr CR Rao died at the age of 102 on 22nd August 2023. He was a retired professor at the Pennsylvania State University and a research professor at the University of Buffalo. 

Calyampudi Radhakrishna Rao revolutionized the field of statistics at his age and has worked for 75 years to contribute towards groundbreaking research in maths and statistics. His research has contributed to the development of estimation theory, differential geometry and multivariate analysis. 

His educational background is exceptional to look at and speaks volumes about his profound interest in his chosen career path. Students can take inspiration from this legend in the present day when education is no more a celebrated privilege for most.  

The genius of Padma Vibhushan DR CR Rao, who completed his Masters from Andhra University, went on to win International Prize in Statistics(2023), equivalent of Nobel Prize.

Education 

Dr CR Rao did his schooling and graduated from Andhra Pradesh. He then pursued an MSc in mathematics from Andhra University. His quest for knowledge kept him looking for more and so in 1943 he attained an MA in statistics from Calcutta University. 

Dr Rao had a deep connection with research and learning, therefore, he let on to achieve a PhD at King’s College in Cambridge in the UK. The research facilities and knowledge that were firing his passion became a torch for many. He continued to attain a DSc degree at the same college later on. 

Career and Achievement

This ‘Living Legend’ as described by the American Statistical Association is an ideal role model for those who want to pursue research courses and make a career in mathematics or statistics. His dedication inspired him to work in reputed institutes like the Indian Statistical Institute where he was promoted to the position of director, the Anthropology Museum, the University of Pittsburgh as a university professor, the Director of the Center for Multivariate Analysis at Pennsylvania State University and many more. 

He has also won numerous awards and accolades for his contribution to various fields of research over the years. He has various publications and research papers as well. The man was actually a living legend till his last breath and we will always remember him as a great achiever and torchbearer for the youth of every age.
