What is IELTS Writing Task 1 Vocabulary?

While writing essays, candidates can improve their IELTS scores by knowing the aspects of lexis & vocabulary, which are the determining factors during the IELTS Writing assessment. This includes word formation, the use of less common expressions and vocabulary, and using the appropriate synonyms. 

Under this section, the examiner uses four criteria to calculate your response; grammatical range and accuracy, task achievement, lexical resource, coherence and cohesion. The Lexical Resource will carry 25% weightage of your Task 1.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Marking Scheme

The marking scheme for the IELTS Writing Task 1 will depend on four factors – Grammatical Range and Accuracy, Task Achievement, Lexical Resource and Coherence and Cohesion. Each of these factors consists of 25% of the total weightage of this section. The grammatical range will be assessed on two things.

  • Writing grammatically correct sentences; and
  • Wider use of grammatical structures and range of vocabulary.
