IELTS Essay Topic: Some people think that the government should strictly control the supply of fresh water, as it is a limited resource, while others it should not be regulated.

Q- Some people think that the government should strictly control the supply of fresh water, as it is a limited resource, while others it should not be regulated. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

Ans- Water is one of the most essential resources for life on Earth. As the global population continues to grow, the demand for freshwater also increases. This has led to a debate over whether the government should strictly control the supply of fresh water or not. In this essay, I will examine both sides of the argument and give my opinion on how while the free market can play a role in the distribution of fresh water, the government must also play a significant role in regulating it.

On the one hand, those who support government control argue that fresh water is a limited resource that must be carefully managed. They believe that without strict regulation, the demand for water will quickly outstrip the supply. This could lead to water shortages and the depletion of underground aquifers. In addition, they argue that regulating the supply of fresh water would ensure that it is distributed fairly among all members of society.

On the other hand, those who oppose government control argue that water is a commodity that should be subject to market forces. They argue that by allowing the market to determine the price of water, it will encourage people to use it more efficiently. In addition, they argue that government control would create a monopoly, which would stifle innovation and lead to inefficiencies in the market.

In my opinion, while the free market can play a role in the distribution of fresh water, the government must also play a significant role in regulating it. The government should ensure that water is distributed fairly among all members of society, regardless of their ability to pay. This can be achieved through measures such as water conservation campaigns, investment in water infrastructure, and incentives for businesses to use water more efficiently. However, the government should also consider the needs of the market, and provide incentives for companies that can find ways to reduce water usage while maintaining profitability.

In conclusion, the debate over whether the government should strictly control the supply of fresh water is complex. While there are arguments on both sides, I believe that the government must play a role in regulating the supply of water to ensure that it is distributed fairly and sustainably. At the same time, the government should also encourage innovation and efficiency in the market to ensure that the needs of businesses and consumers are met.
