  • It fosters social cohesion by promoting a sense of unity and mutual respect among citizens.
  • Ensures that all citizens have access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and housing.

Q. Many believe that the best way to ensure a happier society is to reduce the difference in income earnings between the rich and poor. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Ans. The disparity in income earnings between the rich and the poor has been a topic of significant debate. Many state that reducing the income gap is the most effective way to ensure a happy society. I agree with this perspective, as narrowing income inequality can lead to improved access to essential services and a more equitable distribution of opportunities.

Firstly, reducing income disparity can foster social cohesion. When the gap between rich and poor is wide, it leads to social stratification, resentment and tension within the society. On the other hand, a more balanced income distribution can promote a sense of unity and mutual respect among citizens. For instance, Scandinavian countries, which are known for relatively low levels of inequality, consistently rank high on the World Happiness Report. This suggests that a more equal society can contribute to overall happiness and well-being.

Secondly, the reduction in the income gap can improve access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and housing. When wealth is in the hands of few people, the majority may struggle to afford necessities. By redistributing income more equitably, governments ensure that all citizens have access to these fundamental services. This, in turn, can lead to healthier, better-educated, and more productive populations. For example, public healthcare systems in countries with lower income inequality, such as Germany,  provide comprehensive coverage to all citizens, thereby enhancing their quality of life.

In conclusion, reducing the income gap between the rich and the poor is indeed a crucial step towards ensuring a happier society. It promotes social cohesion, improves access to essential services, and provides equitable opportunities for all. By addressing income inequality, governments can create a more just and harmonious society, ultimately leading to greater collective happiness and well-being.
