What are Transitive and Intransitive Verbs?
If you are here for the quiz, then you must be a learned grammar enthusiast or a practitioner. Still, you should quickly overview these two grammatical terminologies to keep the potential mistakes at bay:
- Transitive Verbs: They require an object to complete their meaning. Moreover, they express an action that is done to something or someone. For example, she wrote [Verb] a letter. [Object]
- Intransitive Verbs: Unlike transitive verbs, they do not require an object to complete their meaning. Thus, they express an action that is complete in itself. For instance, the baby laughed. [Verb]
However, you must not forget that some verbs can be both transitive and intransitive, depending on the context.
For example, the verb “break” can be transitive in the sentence “She broke the vase” (the vase is the object), but it can also be intransitive in the sentence “The vase broke” (there is no object).
