Nouns
Nouns, also known as naming words are used to name people, places, ideas, animals and things. They can be classified into two categories: common nouns and proper nouns. Pronouns
These include words that are used to substitute a noun in a sentence. Pronouns can be classified into reflexive pronouns, possessive pronouns, indefinite pronouns and relative pronouns.

- I hurt myself yesterday when I was playing football.
Verbs
Verbs also known as action words refer to actions that are being performed by the noun or subject in a sentence. Some common examples of verbs include reading, sitting, come, pitch, running etc.
Adjectives
Also known as describing words, they provide more information about nouns or pronouns in a sentence. In simple words, they tell us about more than a person, thing, place or idea. Here is an example of an adjective and how it is used in a sentence.
Example:
- The tall man walked down the long street.
- John is sitting in the red car.
Adverbs
Adverbs are simply words that add detail and description to other words in a sentence. They typically function by modifying verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or even entire sentences.
Examples:
- The train arrived slowly.
- We spoke very frankly.
Prepositions
Prepositions are words that function like connectors in a sentence. They show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in the sentence.
Example:
- The cat sat on the mat.
- The bird is sitting on the bus.
Conjunctions
Conjunctions act more like a glue that holds a sentence together. They are words (or sometimes short phrases) that connect other words, phrases, or even clauses into a single sentence. This helps you create smoother, more complex sentences and avoid a series of choppy, short ones.
Examples:
- She went to the store and bought milk.
- Because it was raining, we stayed inside.
Interjections
They are words or phrases that are used to express sudden emotions or feelings. They are not grammatically connected to the rest of the sentence and can often stand alone. Interjections are commonly used in spoken language and informal writing.
Examples:
- Wow! That was close!
- Alas, I failed the test.
Determiners
These are words that work with nouns in a sentence to provide more information about them. They typically come right before the noun.
Example:
- The Eiffel Tower is a famous landmark in Paris.
- I saw a cat walking down the street.
