Bollywood Locations to Visit During Your Study Abroad Journey

Have you ever imagined yourself striking the trademark SRK pose in the streets of an exotic location and having your own Bollywood moment? This is your time to feel the main character’s vibes on your study abroad journey. As more and more Bollywood movies are being shot outside the country, tourists flock to these destinations to make memories at that exact location.

However, if you are a student abroad, such locations become all the more accessible and easier to travel to. In this blog, we will be looking at some places where famous Bollywood movies have been shot which you can visit during your study abroad journey. 

Lights, Camera and London

The picturesque city of London has often attracted Indian filmmakers owing to its views, weather and large Indian population. Not only just movie locations but London has also played a pivotal part in Bollywood movies with some movies even being named after the city such as London Dreams and Namaste London. 

Some of the iconic locations in England include Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, King’s Cross Railway Station, etc. Go on and explore the city of London and maybe you will also find your Raj/Simran there. Or even both. You never know!

Melbourne Dreams

The nation of Australia has often attracted filmmakers owing to its sunny weather, beautiful beaches and aesthetic locations. However, Melbourne has gained special affection and love in the eyes of sports fans owing to the majestic sporting culture in the city which even includes the Melbourne Cricket Ground. 

One of the earliest movies to be shot in Melbourne was the rom-com Salaam Namaste. The movie also serves as a wonderful crash course in English and you can maybe pick a slang or two from the iconic Javed Jaffrey.

Apart from Salaam Namaste, more recent movies include Chak De India and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag which were shot at locations like Webb Bridge, State Netball Hockey Centre, Eureka Skydeck, etc. 

The Big Apple – New York 

New York’s popularity in Bollywood can be ascertained by the fact that a major movie was named after the city itself. New York has almost everything that a director may want to showcase. Large crowds, bright lights, tall buildings, etc. You may even be tempted to hum Kal Ho Na Ho and swing your arms wide open during your time at Central Park.

In addition to Kal Ho Na Ho, Karan Johar seems to have a particular obsession with New York with many of his movies such as Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, My Name is Khan, etc. having been shot at iconic locations such as Wall Street, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 17, Park Avenue, etc.

More recently, Sridevi’s last film outing, English Vinglish, was also shot extensively in and around New York. 

Students who move abroad for their academic journey often miss their motherland and the comfort it brings with it. However, it is not dull and gloomy when studying abroad. Students can, during their vacations and off-days, visit some of the iconic places in the city or country they are staying in and enjoy the views in real life which they previously enjoyed on a big screen.
