Shiva Thapa, the 29-year-old Indian boxer, is all set for the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023, where he will be boxing with Askat Kulatev of Kyrgyzstan in the Men’s 63.5kg category. In 2022, he became the first male boxer to win 6 medals at the Asian Championships by securing a silver in Jordon.
The Round of 16 will take place on 27th September 2023 at Hangzhou Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China, in which the Indian boxer will be facing his Kyrghystan counterpart. The live telecast of this sporting event will be available on Sony Sports Network channels, starting at 1:15 IST (Indian Standard Time).

Shiva Thapa started boxing at an early age, when his father Padam Thapa who was a karate instructor in Guwahati encouraged him to pick up Karate. When his father got to know that karate was not an Olympic sport, he enrolled Shiva into boxing.
Shiva followed a regimented life since the age of six – he used to wake up at 3 a.m., run for 3 km, and do endurance and strength exercises like push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups. He used to go to Ulubari Boxing Club in Assam along with his elder brother, after which they used to attend school.
His professional boxing career started in 2005 at the sub-junior National Boxing Championship in Noia, UP. He wanted to participate in the 36kg category, but due to some misunderstanding, he had to participate in the 38kg category, for which he had to drink a lot of water. Surprisingly, he won the National Championship by defeating the Services Champion.

Starting from the 2005 sub-junior National Championship in Noida to the ongoing Hangzhou Asian Games, Shiva Thapa has always been the centre stage in boxing with his fast-forward attacking technique. He was the first Indian to qualify for the Olympics in Boxing and was the youngest Indian boxer to win a gold medal in the Asian Confederation Boxing Championship at Amman, Jordon in July 2013.
