• Although India achieved independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, the country remained governed primarily by the colonial Government of India Act of 1935 for the first three years.

• The constitution of India took more than two years to complete and finalize. 
• The then leaders of the country considered it appropriate to choose January 26 as the official date as it coincided with Purna Swaraj’s declaration of independence by the Indian National Congress in 1930. 
• With the ultimate adoption of the 1950 constitution, the country finally came to be known as the Republic of India.
