| Good morning, respected teachers and fellow classmates. Today, I stand before you all to discuss one of the most concerning issues of the century; human trafficking. Sometimes I thank god for giving me such a great life, where I have parents to take care of me, my siblings and friends for their moral support, and my teachers, who are always determined to make me a better person. But then I think of people forced to work against their will. In its 2023 report, the Delhi Police stated that crimes related to human trafficking increased to 22% in one year. And do you know how many people were rescued by the State Police? 839. Human trafficking is not a new social disaster. It has been in existence for millennia and what is more challenging is its hidden nature and complex networks. Human trafficking is difficult to detect because the crime is done in the shadows. The traffickers use threat and manipulation tactics to lure the victims, and once they fall into their trap, it’s game over. Our government, judicial system, and police departments are collectively working towards the elimination of human trafficking. In fact, Articles 23 and 24 of the Indian Constitution prohibit the practices of human trafficking and forced labor. However, we as individuals also have to participate actively and raise our voices against human trafficking. Only then, will we be able to eliminate this evil practice. Thank you! |

| Good morning everyone. Today, I am extremely pleased to express my views on one of the most challenging issues in our society; human trafficking. Human Trafficking is a humiliating and degrading crime, destroying the lives of poor people, hampering law and order, and damaging the credibility of the nation. Imagine it’s a normal day where you are sitting in your school or office, having a cup of tea and reading a newspaper. There is this news in bold heading, highlighting human trafficking activities, where poor victims have fallen for it. Will it not ruin your mood? Your first response or question will be, ‘What is the government or the police doing?’ It is quite natural to ask questions like these but to understand crimes like human trafficking, we need to take a look at their root causes. Human traffickers feed on the vulnerable, and in this case, it is the poor. A family with a long, downtrodden line of poverty is most likely to fall victim to human trafficking. Then there is a lack of education, making the poor more susceptible to false promises of work, education, or a better life. People living in war-torn areas or politically unstable regions are displaced from their homes, becoming vulnerable to trafficking. Traffickers are smart. I am not here to appreciate them but to highlight their ability to exploit vulnerabilities and navigate different systems, showcasing certain strategic capabilities. Take, for example, Elon Musk, the American Billionaire who once said, ‘Drug traffickers know more about running a business successfully than a college professor.’ Again, he appreciates the drug traffickers but highlights their ability to run a business successfully. If human traffickers are smart and cunning, so are our law enforcement agencies. They are backed by the law, have access to state-of-the-art infrastructure to nab traffickers, and are determined in their pursuit to stop trafficking. Moreover, human trafficking is a criminal offense under Section 370 of the Indian Penal Code. In 2006, the Ministry of Home Affairs set up the Anti-Trafficking Cell (ATC) to combat human trafficking. At the International level, India has done fabulous work by implementing international Conventions on human trafficking, such as the the United Nations Convention on Transnational Organised Crime (UNCTOC), the SAARC Convention on Preventing and Combating Trafficking in Women and Children for Prostitution, and various bilateral meetings to eliminate cross border trafficking. Our lawmakers, judiciary, and police personnel are performing their service to the best. Therefore, we also have to act as responsible citizens and raise awareness to eliminate human trafficking in our country. Thank you! |
