Can I Give UGC Net in First Year of Masters?

Only postgraduate students or students waiting for the final year result of their master’s degree can apply for the UGC Net examination. Also, the candidate who is applying for the examination must not be more than 30 years of age. Apart from this, a candidate must check the eligibility criteria before applying for this examination.

General Eligibility Requirements of UGC Net Exam

Given are the general eligibility requirements for the UGC Net examination. To clear the examination, you need to meet with the given eligibility requirements.

  • Master’s degree with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC/PwD/Transgender).
  • Degree must be from a UGC recognized university in relevant fields.
  • Final year students can apply provisionally but need to complete their degree within 2 years with required marks.
  • PhD holders with Master’s completed before September 19, 1991 get 5% relaxation (only 50% marks needed).

UGC Net Age Limitations

There is no age limit to apply for the post of UGC NET Assistant Professor or Lecturership.

UGC NET JRF Eligibility Criteria

There are some eligibility criteria that you need to meet for the UGC NET JRF position. If you qualify for JRF (research fellowship), you are automatically eligible for Assistant Professor positions. However, qualifying for Assistant Professor only does NOT make you eligible for JRF.

Who doesn’t need to take the UGC NET exam?

Some exemptions comes into for some people who does not need to appear for the UGC NET examination.

  • PhD holders: People with a PhD following specific UGC regulations don’t need to take the UGC NET exam.
  • People who passed UGC/CSIR JRF before 1989: People who cleared this exam before 1989 are exempt.
  • Those who passed a State Eligibility Test (SET) before June 1, 2002: They can apply for Assistant Professor jobs anywhere in India.
  • Those who passed SET after June 1, 2002: They can apply for Assistant Professor jobs only in the state where they cleared their SET.

These exemptions are only for applying to Assistant Professor positions.
