Getting to know the First Woman Chief Minister of Delhi

The First Woman Chief Minister of Delhi is Sushma Swaraj (née Sharma) from the BJP. However, she held the position for a brief 52 days from the 13th of October, 1998 to the 3rd of December, 1998. Notably, Sushma held numerous official positions as part of the Indian Government. In 1977, at the age of 25, she was the youngest Cabinet Minister from Haryana. Who is Sushma Swaraj?

Sushma Swaraj was born on the 14th of February, 1952 in Ambala, Punjab. She was the daughter of Shrimati Laxmi Devi and Hardev Sharma. Moreover, her father was a member of the RSS. 

• Born into a Punjabi Hindu Brahmin family, Sushma pursued her bachelors in Political Science and Sanskrit from the Sanatan Dharma College. 
• During her college years, for 3 years consecutively she won the best Hindi speaker award from the Language Department of Haryana. 
• Furthermore, from Panjab University, she completed her law degree after which she entered politics in the 1970’s via ABVP.
• In addition, Sushma’s law practice began at the Supreme Court of India in 1973.
• Moreover, she was in the Total Revolution Movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan.

Achievements of the First Woman Chief Minister of India

Additionally, Sushma joined the BJP after the National Emergency and her political career flourished therein. 

•  In 1977, at 25, Sushma became the youngest Cabinet Minister in the Government of Haryana. 
• Two years later, at 27, she became the State President of the Janata Party in Haryana. 
• Moreover, Sushma was the first female Spokesperson of a national political party in India.
• She also held various notable positions within the BJP, including being the First Female Chief Minister, Union Cabinet Minister, General Secretary, Spokesperson, Leader of Opposition, and Minister of External Affairs.
• In addition, Sushma became the Second Female Chief Minister in India, after V. N. Janaki of Tamil Nadu, to not be a member of the legislature. 
• She was also the first and only female MP in the Indian Parliament to receive the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award. 
• On the 19th of February 2019, Sushma accepted the prestigious Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit from the Spanish government.
  • This honour was bestowed in appreciation of India’s assistance in evacuating Spanish citizens from Nepal during the 2015 earthquake.
