History, Affiliations and Rankings

The University of Houston (UH), founded in 1927, is a public research university in Houston, Texas, USA. It is the main institution of the University of Houston System. In 1934, it became a university, and in 1963, it became a state institution. The University of Houston has a long history of academic distinction dating back to 1927. The college adopted the cougar, subsequently dubbed Shasta, as its official mascot in 1947, beginning one of its many rich traditions. It became a part of the newly formed University of Houston System in 1977. The university has been upgraded to Tier One status by the Carnegie Foundation. The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and Universities Research Association are all affiliated with the university. As per QS World University Rankings 2022, the university is ranked between #701-750 and as per THE World University Rankings 2022, the university is ranked between #601-800. Furthermore, U.S. News Best Global Universities 2022 rankings rank Houston at #439 globally.
