The Memorial University of Newfoundland was established in the year 1925 in Canada. Memorial University has a specific responsibility to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador as the province's sole university. Memorial University was founded as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who died while serving in the First World War and later conflicts, and it strives to honour that enormous sacrifice by educating the people of this province. The Memorial University of Newfoundland is committed to innovation, creativity, and excellence in research, quality education, teaching and learning. The faculties of the university have been accredited with various awards and honours for their significant contributions to society. A few of the national and international awards that illustrate the Memorial University of Newfoundland as a global research university are SSHRC Insight Award, SSHRC. QS World University Rankings 2022 places the university among #751-800. THE World University Rankings 2022 ranks the university at #601-800.

Campus, Courses and Infrastructure

Students can select from various industry-driven programs ranging from certificate programs to master’s degree courses. The Memorial University of Newfoundland has numerous campuses in and around Atlantic Canada including St. John’s campus, Grenfell Campus, Harlow Campus, and Signal Hill Campus. Recently, the university has established a new campus named Signal Hill Campus. What began over a century ago as a small teachers' training institution has subsequently developed into a complete doctorate university with more than 100-degree programmes. As the sole institute located in Newfoundland and Labrador, the university offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Engineering and Applied Science, Pharmacy, Arts, Science, Nursing, Education, Fine Arts, Human Kinetics and Recreation, Medicine, Business, Music, Maritime Studies, Technology and Ocean Instrumentation, Resource Management and Social Work. The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers the world’s only co-operative teaching program in Marine and Naval Architectural Engineering. Marine Institute of the Memorial University Of Newfoundland is a world-leading institute in the field of Applied Research and Ocean Training. 

Accomplishments and Alumni

Ranked among the top 20 universities in Canada, the university received over $100 million in research funding in 2017. Memorial’s nationally and internationally recognized faculty includes 16 fellows of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, 20 Canada Research Chairs, 11 fellows of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and 29 fellows of the Royal Society of Canada. The alumni of the university have gone on to be leaders in business, industry, education, research, government, and a variety of entrepreneurial ventures both locally and globally, including Rock Hillier (Former Commander of the Canadian Army), Wayne Johnston (Canadian Novelist), and Moya Greene (Canadian Businesswoman).

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The Memorial University of Newfoundland welcomes learners and intellectuals from all over the globe and is home to over 19,000 students from 118 countries. The university has 18,204 students enrolled in 2017, with around 13,500 undergraduates and 3,800 graduate students. Since 1925, when the first class of 55 students enrolled, the university has grown significantly. More than 20% of the students at the university come from international backgrounds.
