Kettering University, established in 1919 in Flint, Michigan, is one of the most prestigious automotive and engineering institutes of the world. Started as the School of Automotive Trades by Albert Sobey, the school was soon acquired by General Motors in 1926 and became the General Motors Institute of Technology which eventually turned to the General Motors Institute in 1932. But as General Motors stopped its operations in Flint, the institute broke it ties with General Motors and renamed GMI Engineering & Management Institute. It was only 1998, GMI Engineering & Management Institute got serrated and it finally became fully independent Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. The university was named after Head of Research of General Motors, Charles Kettering and his belief in the power of combining theory with practice. Today, Kettering University offers a number of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level programs in the field of Applied Physics, Computer Engineering, Business Administration, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science. The university has also launched distant learning programs for postgraduate studies. The academics are designed in such a way that the undergraduate programs require the 160 credit hours for graduation. Apart from this, Kettering University also offers students with 40 short courses, certification courses and minors. The university also has different departments including Applied Biology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry Liberal Studies, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics Computer Science and Business. The main campus is spread across 90 acres in Flint, Michigan. It is comprised of a number of historic buildings and halls which have had a great impact on the development of the institute. With a total of 2,500 students enrolled in the university, the academic staff has nearly 150 members.
