Materials engineers create and manufacture new materials, which include semiconductors, polymers, ceramics, ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, and composite materials. Their contributions have led to breakthroughs in microelectronics, displays, energy storage, aerospace, and biomedical devices, among many other fields. The materials engineering curriculum at Brown provides graduates with both the expertise necessary to practice their profession, as well as the interdisciplinary foundation necessary to collaborate with the engineers who will use the materials that they develop. A substantial fraction of materials engineering students at Brown participate in research, which allows them to make use of Brown's state-of-the-art facilities in microscopy, materials characterization, and materials processing. The concentration has the following structure: Interdisciplinary core courses for the Sc.B., taken during the first two years Seven upper level engineering courses including required courses on thermodynamics, kinetics, and mechanical properties of materials; three courses chosen from five topical materials courses (electronic materials, soft and polymeric materials, ceramics and composites, biomaterials, and metallic materials); and a capstone design project. An advanced science course (usually solid-state physics) Four approved humanities courses Through their choice of upper level materials courses and through the use of electives, students have the opportunity to focus on specific areas of materials engineering that interest them. Examples of these include mechanics of materials, polymers and biomaterials, electrical properties and their applications, or materials processing. The Biomedical Engineering program at Brown provides cutting–edge, interdisciplinary, graduate–level education at the interface of engineering, biology, and medicine. The program features an interdisciplinary approach in four complementary research areas: Tissue Engineering/Regenerative Medicine Neuroengineering/Imaging Biomaterials/Nanotechnology Biomechanics Research in these areas is advancing the understanding of fundamental problems in biology and medicine, while developing new therapies to improve the quality of life for people with medical problems. The program is distinguished by its strong and collaborative connections between academic science, clinical medicine, and industry. Graduate students take engineering, biology and medical school courses, gain valuable clinical experience at nearby teaching hospitals associated with the Brown Medical School, and engage in stimulating internships at companies commercializing biomedical technologies. These opportunities, coupled with dissertation research, give graduate students both the intellectual and the practical skills required for developing today's emerging science into useful biomedical technology and therapies. Mechanical engineering is the broadest of all engineering disciplines. The traditional role of a mechanical engineer is to design engines and turbines; renewable and conventional energy conversion systems; vehicles and aircraft; tooling and manufacturing equipment, and building services. The field continues to evolve: today's mechanical engineers design biomedical devices and instrumentation; sensors; 3D printers; micro-electro-mechanical systems; and robots. Since all products need to be designed to withstand stress, vibrations and heat, mechanical engineers are in demand at nearly all companies, including those that design and manufacture consumer electronics; semiconductor and computer manufacturers, and software companies specializing in computer-aided-design. The curriculum in Mechanical Engineering is intended to provide students with a broad interdisciplinary foundation; and specialized training in the two pillars of mechanical engineering: mechanical and thermal systems. The program offers a wide range of specialized tracks within mechanical engineering, allowing students to design a program tailored to their individual goals. The Fluids and Thermal Sciences (FTS) Group utilizes theoretical, experimental, and computational methodologies to investigate a wide range of fundamental and practical fluid dynamical systems and physical phenomena. Research in the Group typically emphasizes a sound understanding of the underlying fundamentals that govern a particular system or process, but with a vision for broader impacts, industrial applications, and opportunities for commercialization. Both faculty and students in the Fluids and Thermal Sciences Group come from a diverse set of backgrounds that range from mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, aeronautical/aerospace engineering, physics, and physical chemistry. The FTS Group is highly collaborative with faculty and researchers from other groups in the School of Engineering, Physics, Biology and Medicine, Evolutionary Biology, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science.

Electrical engineers design and manufacture computer hardware; sensors; biomedical instrumentation; communication systems; control systems; radar and navigation equipment, as well as power generation equipment and propulsion systems. Brown's Sc.B. degree in Electrical Engineering is designed to allow students to construct a program tailored to their interests. Building on the broad scientific foundation provided by the core curriculum, students may select combinations of upper level courses designed to prepare them for seven areas of specialization within Electrical Engineering. It is possible to switch between these specializations as late as senior year. Computer engineers specialize in applications which require a knowledge of both electrical engineering and computer science. They design and manufacture computer hardware (from chips to servers); they design and operate networks and communication systems; and have developed many of the 'smart' devices that continue to change the way we live and work. They are at the forefront of fields such as cybersecurity; machine intelligence; networking; and embedded systems. The computer engineering undergraduate program combines the best of the School of Engineering with Brown's world-class Department of Computer Science. Students take courses in both departments, gaining proficiency in both software and hardware. Their interdisciplinary foundation also prepares them to identify and implement innovative applications for hardware and software. Nearly all students in the computer engineering program engage in collaborative research with faculty through internships or independent study. These provide students access to state-of-the-art facilities in computer engineering and computer vision such as those of the Laboratory for Engineering Man/Machine Systems. MA in Public Humanities at Brown University is offered as a 1.5-year program by the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage. This university is ranked #60 in QS Global World Rankings in 2021. It is an on-campus program offered on a full-time basis only. The master's program in Public Humanities offers a dynamic interdisciplinary opportunity for students interested in careers in museums, historical societies, cultural planning agencies, heritage tourism, historic preservation and community arts programs. Brown’s MA degree in Public Humanities offers a unique program of study for those interested in public engagement and the work of cultural organizations. This program provides academic rigor while remaining flexible and offering courses in methods and theory in several humanities fields. The program provides experiences and training in a number of important skills including curating, exhibition design, cultural and non-profit management, digital humanities, historic preservation, public presentation, teaching, archival research, and fluency in current debates about decolonization and equity. A wide selection of classes at Brown, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences can be configured to meet student's individual learning goals. Faculty and students of the MA in Public Humanities program work together to produce exhibitions and educational programming, articles, publications, and special collaborations with community partners in the region and within Brown University. This broad academic and practical approach provides graduates with flexibility in the job market and preparation to succeed in a number of public humanities fields. The MA program consists of 8-semester courses (8 tuition units).

Mathematics is used to describe fundamental physical principles, the behavior of matter, and the interactions of matter and energy. As the most fundamental of sciences, physics provides a foundation for other scientific fields as well as the underpinnings of modern technology. The Physics department is unique because of the breadth of its faculty expertise and research, and the relatively intimate size of its classes above the introductory level. Physics concentrators may choose to pursue either the A.B. or the more intensive Sc.B. degree. Course work on either path covers a broad base of topics (for example, electricity and magnetism, classical and quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and statistical mechanics). The Sc.B. degree requires additional advanced topics as well as a senior thesis project.

Architectural Studies emphasizes a deep understanding of how architecture has defined and created built environments across space and time. Required courses in this field of study, help students develop skills that are relevant to the practice of architecture. Graduates often pursue a Ph.D. in the History of Architecture or a Master’s of Architecture.

The Brown MPH is rooted in the University's tradition of academic excellence and collaborative synergies, much like the field of public health itself. Students and faculty move freely among our research centers and academic departments—across and beyond the university, too. Brown MPH graduates go on to make important public health contributions in academic settings, government agencies, consulting firms, and non-profits.

We stress creative thinking and critical production: comparative analysis and theoretical reflection, as well as work that integrates practice and theory. We thus bring together aspects of modern culture that are normally separated by departmental structures such as film and media studies, fine art, literature, literary arts and philosophy. This concentration offers the student a range of possible specializations. A student might decide to focus on the critical study and production of a certain type or combination of media (print, photography, sound recording, cinema, video, television, and digital media); or they might focus on certain cultural, theoretical and/or social formations (for example, gender/sexuality in post-Cold war television, postcolonial theory and film, the changing form of the novel, theories of subjectivity and ideology, video games and theories of representation). These paths are united by a commitment to critical thinking/practice: rather than reproducing conventions, MCM concentrators learn how conventions emerge, what work they do, and explore ways to change them.

The Philosophy concentration offers courses covering subjects from the philosophy of religion to the philosophies of science and literature. It also provides survey courses on various periods in the history of philosophy. Concentrators can expect to strengthen their knowledge of and skills in ancient philosophy, early modern philosophy, logic, epistemology and metaphysics. Students are asked to identify an area of specialization. There is also a related, but separate concentration in physics and philosophy.

The work in the program is demanding and the standards of performance are high. The department's reputation for providing superb training has enabled its graduates to compile an excellent placement record, including major research universities, prestigious liberal arts colleges, government and international agencies, and private industrial, consulting, and research firms. The department faculty includes the editors of the Journal of Economic Growth, the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Development Economics, the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, the Journal of Urban Economics, and the Journal of Human Resources, among others; several fellows of the Econometric Society; several Sloan fellows; a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association; and numerous associates and fellows of the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Center for Economic Policy Research. The atmosphere in the department is highly collegial, and interaction among faculty members and graduate students is easy and extensive. The department hosts four weekly seminars (Economic Theory, Macroeconomics, Applied Microeconomics, and Econometrics), as well as parallel lunches and breakfasts for graduate student work in progress.

The concentration in Contemplative Studies investigates the underlying philosophical, psychological, and scientific bases of human contemplative experience. Students pursue a "third person" academic approach drawn from the humanities and sciences to analyze the cultural, historical, and scientific underpinnings of contemplative experiences in religion, art, music, and literature. This is developed in combination with a "critical first-person" approach based in practical experience of contemplative techniques and methods to provide an integrated understanding of the role of contemplative thought and experience in societies and on the individuals who constitute them.

Geochemists investigate low-temperature and high-temperature processes operating on scales that range from atoms, to the Earth, to the solar system. Low-temperature geochemistry focuses on chemical and biochemical processes on and near Earth's surface, including environmental geochemistry, pollution in the ocean and freshwater bodies, and how the Earth’s geochemical record reflects past climate conditions. High-temperature geochemistry focuses on the formation and evolution of the Earth and other planets, magma formation and properties, volcanic activity, and metamorphism. Both AB and ScB degrees are offered; the ScB requires more (19) courses, including a research course. DEEPS provides a highly collaborative learning environment that emphasizes process-oriented, hands-on approaches in the classroom, in labs and on field trips. There are many opportunities for students to do research working with faculty, graduate students, and researchers. The degree builds students’ skills in critical thinking, written and oral communication, data analysis and modeling, and applying systems approaches to problem solving, which prepare students for a wide variety of careers.

Mathematics concentrators at Brown can explore these concepts through the department's broad course offerings and flexible concentration requirements. The concentration leads to either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree (the latter is strongly recommended for students interested in pursuing graduate study in mathematics or related fields). Concentrators begin their learning with multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and abstract algebra. Beyond these prerequisites, students take a variety of advanced topics on the 1000 and 2000 level based on their interests. Students also have the option of completing a thesis project.

The Department of the History of Art and Architecture is committed to the ongoing study of art, architecture, and material culture. The department’s courses and research are grounded in the humanities, and intersect with study in visual art, global cultures, science and technology studies, and the built environment. Our nationally renowned faculty scholars span diverse areas of study, and help to train students to become conversant in visual, historical, and critical analysis across visual cultures, historical periods and geographic regions. Our alumni have gone on to successful careers as scholars, educators, arts administrators, intellectual property lawyers and museum curators among other rewarding professions in art and culture.

It is the study of the properties of stars, galaxies, and the Universe, and as such combines elements from the disciplines of both Physics and Planetary Geology. Students pursuing this concentration complete introductory coursework in classical mechanics, relativity, and astrophysics, along with mathematics and electromagnetism. They go on to complete courses in stellar and extragalactic astrophysics as well as cosmology. Facilities available to concentrators include the historic Ladd Observatory.

Comparative literature is the study of cultural expression across linguistic boundaries. At Brown, the Department of Comparative Literature is distinct in its conviction that literary research and instruction must be international in character, and its undergraduate and graduate programs are considered among the finest in the country. Undergraduate students study a generous range of literary works – from Western cultures, both ancient and modern, to Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic – to develop a critical understanding of how cultures differ from one another.

These areas therefore form the required background coursework for this program, and serve as a springboard to an advanced focus, developed in consultation with a concentration advisor. Advanced foci may include structure-function relations of macromolecules, biomechanics of cell cytoskeleton, biotechnology for drug and gene delivery, molecular mechanisms of membrane transport, sensory signal transduction, for examples. The program also requires a capstone research project that reflects this focus and may be drawn from collaborative research opportunities offered by faculty in biology, chemistry, or physics departments.

Cognitive neuroscience is the study of higher cognitive functions in humans and their underlying neural bases. It is an integrative area of study drawing primarily from cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, and linguistics. There are two broad directions that can be taken in this concentration - one is behavioral/experimental and the other is computational/modeling. In both, the goal is to understand the nature of cognition from a neural perspective. The standard concentration for the Sc.B. degree requires courses on the foundations, systems level, and integrative aspects of cognitive neuroscience as well as laboratory and elective courses that fit within a particular theme or category such as general cognition, perception, language development or computational/modeling. Concentrators must also complete a senior seminar course or an independent research course. Students may also participate in the work of the Brown Institute for Brain Science, an interdisciplinary program that unites ninety faculty from eleven departments.

Geosciences is a highly interdisciplinary concentration employing principles from physics, chemistry, and biology to understand the structure of the Earth and other planetary bodies. Concentrators can study Earth and planetary interiors, including the formation of rocks and minerals, movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates, and the circulation of the planets’ core and mantle. Other areas emphasize surface processes, such as the movement and storage of water. This concentration is a good choice for students who seek a broad scientific understanding of the processes that shape the physical world around us. The Applied Math - Biology concentration recognizes that mathematics is essential to address many modern biological problems in the post genomic era. Specifically, high throughput technologies have rendered vast new biological data sets that require novel analytical skills for the most basic analyses. These technologies are spawning a new "data-driven" paradigm in the biological sciences and the fields of bioinformatics and systems biology. The foundations of these new fields are inherently mathematical, with a focus on probability, statistical inference, and systems dynamics. These mathematical methods apply very broadly in many biological fields including some like population growth, spread of disease, that predate the genomics revolution. Nevertheless, the application of these methods in areas of biology from molecular genetics to evolutionary biology has grown very rapidly in with the availability of vast amounts of genomic sequence data. Required coursework in this program aims at ensuring expertise in mathematical and statistical sciences, and their application in biology. The students will focus in particular areas of biology. The program culminates in a senior capstone experience that pairs student and faculty in creative research collaborations.

The department has experienced significant growth over the past decade, and enjoys a reputation for intellectual pluralism, creativity, and research productivity. The department today includes 31 leading faculty who use a wide range of empirical and normative approaches to illuminate the most pressing issues of our times. Can liberal democracy withstand rising polarization and economic inequality? How can the international community help bring peace to the world’s most war-torn states? How should governments respond to hate groups and people that oppose the democratic ideal of free and equal citizenship? In recent years, members of the department have won prestigious book awards, published articles in the discipline’s top journals, and received competitive grants from the National Science Foundation and other external sources. The faculty is deeply committed to excellence in both undergraduate teaching and graduate training. Political Science is one of the largest and most dynamic concentrations at Brown.
