The Banjaras are a traditionally nomadic community believed to have migrated either from Rajasthan or Afghanistan’s Gor province. Over time, they spread across the Indian subcontinent and are now found mainly in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Telangana.

They are also called by different names such as Gor, Gormati, Lambani, Vanjara, and Gor Mati (meaning “own people” or “cattle grazers”). The name “Banjara” is said to come from the Sanskrit words ‘Vana Chara’, meaning wanderers of the forest.

Historically, Banjaras played a major role as traders, transporters, and pastoralists. Before modern transport existed, they helped move goods like grains, salt, and spices across different regions using carts, oxen, camels, and donkeys. The type of animal they used depended on the land – camels and donkeys for dry and hilly areas, and oxen for wet or flat areas.

Apart from trade, Banjaras have a rich culture. They are known for colorful clothing, embroidery, tattoo art, rangoli, and their own style of music and dance. Although most Banjaras identify as Hindus, there are also some among them who follow Islam, such as the Dadhis or Gajugonia groups.

Some historians, like Motiraj Rathod, suggest that the Banjaras have been called by this name since around the 14th century, and might have historical links to another ancient group called the Laman, with a history dating back 3,000 years.
