University of Helsinki has launched a new project that aims at enhancing the integration of international students.

The University of Helsinki, Finland has taken a significant step towards becoming the best place for studying, teaching, working, and conducting research. It has launched a new project that aims at enhancing the integration of international students.

The project is titled “A Boost for International Activities.” It seeks to identify and address key challenges faced by international students when integrating into the university community.

The project aims to develop effective operating models that provide all students with equal opportunities to participate in community activities. The project is in collaboration with subject- and faculty-specific student organizations, international students, the Student Union of the University of Helsinki, and the university itself.

By formulating practical solutions collaboratively, the project strives to ensure that international students not only excel academically but also have a fulfilling social life. It also ensures that the students have friends to share their experiences with.

Vice-Rector Kai Nordlund of the University of Helsinki emphasized the importance of providing social support to international students. Nordlund says, “To avoid being left alone and without peer support, it’s really important for them to not only attend University teaching but also have a good social life. They should also have friends with whom they share their joys, sorrows, and experiences of success.”

Various Organizations are Supporting the Initiative

The project aligns with the university’s strategic plan and is part of the Talent Boost activities. This aims to promote the settling and integration of international students in Finland. 

In the pilot stage, various subject- and faculty-specific organizations will be actively involved in the project. 

The organizations include Kannunvalajat, KTTO, Limes, MaO, Matlu, MMYL, MYY, Peduca, and YFK.  Männikkömetsä Oy, an external partner, is also supporting the initiative.

To refine practices and develop event concepts, international students will be invited to workshops in the upcoming autumn of 2023. 

The University of Helsinki aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment for international students. Moreover,this project marks a significant stride towards the goal of providing an exceptional experience for international students, ensuring their successful integration into the university community.
