Study in Canada: New Action Plan Comes into Place for In-Demand Jobs

Canadian provinces will create more than one million jobs over the next decade. Several provincial government news reports are already proposing plans to address this labour shortage. This will involve improving access to post-secondary education for local students and helping newcomers find jobs that match their education.

In 2022, more than 1,50,000 immigrants moved to British Columbia, Canada in search of work but found none. However, the government has promised to introduce legislation by fall 2023 that will set “more uniform standards” for the recognition of foreign credentials.

This is intended to give newcomers faster access to the careers they are willing to pursue and remove unnecessary barriers

What are the New Action Plans?

The government has several plans that are yet waiting for implementation. One is to expand career-related opportunities at the “smaller” public post-secondary institutions in British Columbia, particularly those outside the Vancouver region.

The government will also be investing in on-campus student housing by adding 4,000 student beds. The housing is already in the process of building an 8,000-bed-sitter since 2017.

Apart from this, a Rs 39 crore action plan is underlined by a grant of up to Rs 2,87,311 for future qualifications. This grant will cover the cost of training in in-demand occupations. Starting in September 2023, the grant will be available to British Columbians. 

This will make it easier for Columbians to choose from more than 400 eligible training opportunities at post-secondary institutions across British Columbia. Several in-demand jobs include construction, technology, housing and clean energy.

Randal Martin, executive director of the British Columbia Council for International Education, commented in a news report. He said,” With almost 2,00,00 international students in British Columbia, housing more of those students on or near campus will lessen the housing pressure.”

He added, “There is certainly a pronounced need across the province to increase the supply of affordable housing, perhaps nowhere more so than on our urban and rural campuses.”
