The age limit of 35 years is still applicable to graduates of master’s, bachelor’s, associate degree and vocational programs. This will come into effect from 1st July, 2024. The Department of Home Affairs in Australia has declared that it will maintain the minimum age requirement of 50 for post study work visas for research students. After the publication of changes to the Temporary Graduate Visa Program, the decision will come into effect from 1st July, 2024.

Earlier, the department has decided to reduce the minimum age limit to 35 for all Temporary Graduate 485 visa streams. But this is exceptional for those who have Hong Kong and British National Overseas passports. As per the government official statements, The maximum eligible age for post-higher education work stream applicants will reduce to 35 years of age or under at the time of application. Masters and Doctoral Degree graduates and Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders are still eligible if they are under the age of 50 years.

Germany has Introduced a New Skilled Worker Visa Rules for Easier Access to Residence Permits

The 35 year old age limit will still apply to graduates of master’s, bachelor’s, associate degree and vocational programs with effect from 1st July, 2024. The work rights for post-study allowed by government include:

  • 2 years for Bachelor’s Degree
  • 2 years for Master’s by coursework
  • 3 years for Master’s by research
  • 3 years for PhD 

The initial migration strategy suggested that lowering the age limit would support early career professionals. The Group of Eight highlighted that in 2022, 40 percent of international PhD students in Australia were 30 years or more.
