Significant Growth in Study Abroad Numbers

The number of students studying abroad has surged significantly in recent years. This growth reflects increasing global mobility and the desire for diverse educational experiences. Many students seek international opportunities for better academic, cultural, and career prospects. Let us give it a glance at the Estimated Data of Indian students studying abroad from the year 2022.

Study Abroad News Update 5 August 2024:

As it is well known in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global travel and education, around 6.76 lakh Indian students went abroad for higher studies. The subsequent years saw fluctuating numbers, with a sharp decline to approximately 9.07 lakh students in 2022. This decline was a result of travel restrictions and uncertainties due to the pandemic. However, the number of students pursuing education abroad began to rise again in 2023, reaching about 11.58 lakh students.

Indian students continue to prefer a few key destinations for their higher education:

1. Canada: Leading the list, Canada remains the top choice for Indian students, with 4,27,000 students enrolled in Canadian universities in 2024. Although there was a slight decrease from 4,27,085 students in 2023, Canada continues to be a highly favoured destination due to its high-quality education system and welcoming environment.

2. USA: The United States is another popular choice, with 3,37,630 Indian students studying there. The USA’s diverse academic opportunities and prestigious institutions make it a top destination for Indian students seeking advanced education.

3. UK: The United Kingdom attracts 18,500 students from India. The UK’s rich academic history and renowned universities continue to draw Indian students despite a relatively lower number compared to the leading destinations.

4. Australia: With 1,22,202 students, Australia remains a popular choice due to its excellent educational institutions and favourable living conditions for international students.

Changes in Student Enrollment

There has been a noticeable shift in student preferences over recent years. For instance, while Canada saw a small drop in enrollment from the previous year, other countries like Russia and Ukraine have experienced a more significant decrease.

In 2024, 24,940 students chose Russia for their higher education, and only 2,510 opted for Ukraine. This is a decrease from 2022 when 23,515 students went to Ukraine. The decline in students opting for these countries may be attributed to geopolitical tensions and regional instability.

The Role of Indian Missions Abroad

The Ministry of External Affairs plays a crucial role in supporting Indian students studying abroad. Indian Missions and Posts around the world actively engage with students, encouraging them to register either with the Indian Missions or on the Global Rishta Portal. This registration helps the missions maintain contact and provide assistance if needed.

To welcome Indian students who are studying abroad for the first time, Indian Missions organize “Welcome Ceremonies.” These events serve as an opportunity to brief students on safety and security issues in their host countries, helping them adjust to their new environment more smoothly.

Data Collection and Support

Indian Missions also collect data on Indian students through voluntary registrations. This process ensures that the missions have updated information about the number of students in each country. By coordinating with local authorities in the host countries, Indian Missions secure accurate data on the number of Indian students studying abroad, which helps in better planning and support for the students.

The MEA’s approach underscores the importance of staying connected with students overseas, ensuring they have the necessary support and resources during their international educational journey. This continuous engagement is vital for addressing any concerns that students might have and for providing timely assistance if needed.

The rising number of Indian students studying abroad reflects a growing interest in global education and the pursuit of international opportunities. As educational institutions worldwide continue to adapt and provide diverse learning experiences, it is likely that more Indian students will seek opportunities beyond their home country.

Students considering studying abroad should stay informed about their destination, including understanding the local culture, academic expectations, and safety measures. Engaging with Indian Missions and utilizing resources such as the Global Rishta Portal can significantly enhance their international study experience.

In conclusion, the growing number of Indian students pursuing higher education abroad highlights the increasing global reach of Indian education. With strong support systems in place and a wide range of study destinations, Indian students are well-positioned to benefit from international educational opportunities and contribute to a global academic community.
