Study Abroad: New Campaign Empowers International Students to Fight Racism on Campus

International students in Ireland, are you ever feeling isolated or unwelcome on campus? You’re not alone. A new initiative took place on 27 June that called “Speak Out Against Racism” has launched to support you and create a more welcoming and inclusive campus environment. This campaign, run by The Irish Council for International Students (ICOS), aims to empower you to fight discrimination and build a stronger sense of community.  With “Speak Out Against Racism,” you’ll have the tools and resources you need to feel confident and supported throughout your studies in Ireland.

Why is this important?

Studies show that a significant number of international students, roughly two-thirds, have experienced racism while studying in Ireland. This can be anything from verbal abuse to feeling unwelcome.

How did the campaign help?

The Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) is behind this campaign. They’re providing resources like videos and booklets to help you:

  • Understand what racism is
  • Recognize and report incidents of racism (against yourself or others)
  • Learn the importance of speaking out

These resources are available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese to ensure everyone has access to the information they need.

More than resources!

The campaign goes beyond just resources. They held a panel discussion at University College Cork to explore topics like showing support for victims of racism, legal protections against discrimination, and practical ways to deal with racist situations.
