Excel in music, lyrics and psychology of Taylor Swift songs while studying abroad. And no, we are not talking about listening to songs while studying, here we are talking about studying songs while pursuing a course.
With Taylor’s world tour 2023, many universities and students swooned at the Taylor Swift Phenomenon. Meanwhile, 6 major universities also introduced courses or credits based on this mega-celebrity. These universities are the University of Texas Austin, Berkeley College of Music, New York University, Arizona State University, Stanford University and Ghent University.
Let’s explore the courses in detail;
University of Texas and its Taylor Swift Songbook
For the students of the Liberal Arts Honours Program at the University of Texas Austin, there is a change in the coursework. Henceforth, they will now study the literary traditions and forms through Taylor Swift’s songs along with other authors like Shakespeare, Keats, and Frost to compare their problems and practices across eras.
Berkeley School of Music Offering Swift-Writing
An extensive course in Songwriting is introduced this fall at the Berkley School of Music. This course will elucidate Taylor’s compositional and lyrical preferences. It will also explore how she creates musical hooks, chorus, uses rhythm and composes a bridge. The harmony, melody, metaphor, and storytelling of her songs that make them a global hit will also be analysed.
NYU & Taylor’s Entrepreneurial Skills
The few weeks course introduced by the university explores Taylor as a creative entrepreneur. How her journey through youth and adulthood inspired and transformed her work will be covered in the course. The course will also include the growth of Taylor Swift as a global artist including her highs and lows and a swift involvement of politics in this discourse.
ASU & the Psychology of Taylor Swift
The latter half of the title is not a fancy prefix, it is literally the name of the course! Arizona State University is offering a course called The Psychology of Taylor Swift in its fall semester. The coursework will explore her work and personal life as well as the connection between the two. The funny part is that the authorities introduced this course as a joke at first! However, when the department was presented with the course structure, its potential made it pass through.
Stanford University Teaches Taylor’s Storytelling Through Eras
A student named Ava Jefferey designed this course as part of her school’s Student Initiated Course program. The course is named “The Last Great American Songwriter: Storytelling with Taylor Swift Through the Eras”. Surprisingly, this marks the university’s second Swift-inspired course.
