During the academic year 2021-2022, Sweden becomes one of the most popular study-abroad destinations for international students. More than 40,000 international students live and study their desired courses from the universities in Sweden, which is undoubtedly a great growth from the previous years.
As per the official statistics released by the Swedish Higher Education Authority, more than 39,800 students from different parts of the world chose Sweden as their study-abroad destination to complete their higher education in the academic year 2021-2022. Comparing these statistics to the academic year 2020-2021, this is a 19% increase, as stated by the reports.
Out of the 39,800 students, more than 28,000 international students were free movers. These students studied independently for a year or a semester abroad without talking participation in any type of exchange program.
In addition, the enrolment number for women is also greater than for men. Reports show that more than 21,000 foreign students were women whereas, more than 18,000 students were men. Germany and China were the top two countries that sent the highest number of international to Sweden. On the other hand, France achieved the third rank with a total number of 1,857 international students. The list of the country also includes India, Spain, Finland, Italy, Pakistan, USA, and Netherlands.
The popularity of Sweden Amongst International Students
Thanks to the great course materials, prestigious universities, and highly educated professors, many students consider choosing Sweden to complete their higher education. Apart from the countries stated above, students from Norway and Denmark also choose Swedish universities.
The top five Swedish universities that offer great higher education to students are Stockholm University, Lund University, University of Gothenburg, Uppsala University, and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
The Migration Minister of Sweden, Maria Malmer Stenergard, stated that the government is implementing different strategies regarding the visa processes for international students.
