Q. Some people think that cheap airline tickets help people to travel further. Others think that the tickets should be more expensive because of environmental issues. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Ans. In recent years, the affordability of airline tickets has sparked a debate on its benefits and drawbacks. Some people think that cheap airline tickets enable people to travel further and more frequently, while others believe that an increase in ticket prices is important to address environmental concerns. From my perspective, cheap airline tickets make travel accessible and stimulate economic growth, but it is crucial to mitigate the environmental impact of air travel through carbon taxes and sustainable innovations to balance accessibility with environmental responsibility.

On one hand, affordable airline tickets help democratize travel, making it accessible to a broader segment of the population. This accessibility allows people to explore new cultures, foster international relationships, and stimulate economic growth through tourism. For instance, many airlines such as AirAsia have opened up travel opportunities for millions of people who might otherwise have been unable to afford it. This increased mobility not only enriches individuals’ lives but also promotes cross-cultural understanding and global connectivity.

On the other hand, the environmental impact of air travel can not be ignored. Aircraft are significant contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, which exacerbate climate change. The aviation industry is known to be responsible for at least 2-3% of global carbon emissions, and this figure is also expected to rise. Critics argue that making airline tickets more expensive could reduce the frequency of flights and, consequently, lower the environmental footprint. For example, higher ticket prices might encourage people to consider alternative, more sustainable modes of transport, such as trains or buses, especially for shorter distances.

In my opinion, while cheap airline tickets offer considerable benefits in terms of accessibility and economic stimulation, it is crucial to address the environmental impact of increased air travel. One thing that can be done is the implementation of a carbon tax on flights, which will directly address environmental concerns by funding green initiatives and promoting sustainable practices within the aviation industry. Additionally, investing in research and development of more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly aircraft can mitigate the adverse effects of air travel without significantly burdening travellers.

In conclusion, while cheap airline tickets do offer certain advantages, the environmental costs of air travel cannot be ignored. By making airline tickets more expensive, we can reduce emissions, fund green innovations, and promote sustainable travel practices. It is a necessary step towards ensuring a healthier planet and a more sustainable future for all.
