Born on September 7, 1983, in Wardha, Maharashtra, Jwala Gutta comes from a humble background. 

  • Her father, Kranti Gutta, is of Indian descent, and her mother, Yelan Gutta, is of Chinese origin. 
  • Growing up in Hyderabad, Jwala was introduced to badminton at a young age by her mother, who was keen on her taking up sports.
  • She started playing the sport seriously. By the age of 11, she had won the Under-13 Girls’ Doubles National Championship, stepping forward in the field of Badminton.

The IBL Controversy

A controversy erupted during the Indian Badminton League when Delhi Smashers threatened to pull out of a match against Banga Beats over a last-minute replacement of an injured player. As a captain of team smashers, Gutta was served a 14-day show cause notice by BAI for her conduct during the tie and recommended a life ban for the same. 

She refused to apologise and blamed Gopichand, the national coach for not supporting her. The Delhi High Court put a stay on the ban and Gutta received overwhelming support from fans and fellow sports-persons. 

The national federation dropped all charges against her and the impasse was reported to have ended in New Delhi after Gutta won the 78th Senior National Championship alongside Ponnappa and later met BAI president Akhilesh Das.

Awards

Jwala Gutta was awarded the Arjuna Award in the year 2011, It is India’s second-highest sporting honour, given to her for her achievements as an exemplary badminton player by the Indian Government.

After retiring from professional badminton in 2017, Jwala Gutta has remained active in the sports community.
