How to Send IELTS Scores to Universities: Step-by-Step Process

Sending your IELTS scores to your preferred universities is a crucial step in your application journey. These scores verify your English language proficiency, helping university officials determine your adaptability to a global academic setting. Follow the steps below to ensure your scores reach the universities smoothly.

  1. Prior to sending your scores to your preferred university, you must first select the mode of sending scores that is preferred by your university. For example, certain universities abroad prefer to be sent the IELTS scores via electronic score report delivery, while some prefer to be sent by paper TRF delivery. Let’s understand both these methods one by one.
    • Electronic Score Report Delivery: This is the faster and more convenient option. Universities that accept electronic score reports will have instructions for you to follow during your application process. These might involve linking your IELTS test results directly to your university application or providing a unique code to the testing organization.
    • Paper TRF (Test Report Form) Delivery: This is the traditional method. You'll need to request a paper copy of your TRF from the test centre or through the official IELTS website (depending on the test provider).
  2.  Once you know your university's preference, you can choose your delivery method.
  3. If your university requires a paper TRF, you'll need to request it through the official IELTS website or by contacting your test centre. There may be a fee associated with this request, so be sure to check beforehand.
  4. Following your chosen delivery method, submit your scores to your universities.
    • Electronic Delivery: Follow the university's specific instructions, which might involve linking your test results or providing a code.
    • Paper Delivery: Mail your completed TRF (with any required university forms) to the designated address provided by the university. Be sure to use a registered mail service with tracking to ensure delivery.

What is a Test Report Form (TRF)?

The TRF, or Test Report Form, is an official document that contains an individual's official IELTS score. The TRF document includes a candidate's IELTS scores for each section, including Listening, Writing, Reading, and Speaking.

TRF documents are typically favoured by international universities for applicant verification because they incorporate an individual's IELTS scores. In other words, students who want to study abroad must submit their TRF reports, which include their IELTS results.

You can send your IELTS scores to up to five universities you designated during your initial application for free. This benefit applies within one month of your exam date. The delivery method employed by the testing organisation will vary based on the university's preference. Scores can be delivered electronically via email, or through traditional methods like regular mail, courier service, or even overseas postage depending on the institution's location.

If you require your scores to be sent to more than five universities, you will need to request Additional Test Report Forms (ATRFs). This service incurs an administrative fee of INR 250 per university.

An IELTS TRF contains the following details:

  • Test Type: Academic or General Training
  • Centre Number
  • Date of Test
  • Candidate Number
  • Candidate Details such as Family Name, First Name, and Candidate ID
  • Personal Details
  • Test Results
  • IELTS TRF Number
