The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks nominations for the UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women’s Education. The award benefit is an amount of USD 50,000 per year. The UNESCO member states or NGOs with official partnerships must make nominations. They can nominate a total of 3 individuals, institutions, or organizations for the purpose. The nominated people or institutions must have been making strong innovative contributions to girls’ and women’s education. However, self-nominations are not possible. Furthermore, the selection committee chooses only two prize laureates. The application deadline is 24th May 2024.
UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women’s Education Eligibility
The nominations must meet the eligibility criteria and the selection criteria. The UNESCO’s Director-General selects the beneficiaries based on the recommendations made by the Prize’s independent International Jury.
- Generally, a nominated project must have been established and running for 2 years. Moreover, it must demonstrate the potential for replication and scalability.
- The nominations must have a clear focus on advancing women’s education, promoting of gender equality in and through education, and contributing to at least 1 priority area of the prize. The 5 priority areas are participation in education, literacy, gender-responsive and safe teaching-learning environment, engaging teachers to be change agents, and supporting girls and women to acquire knowledge/skills.
UNESCO Prize for Girls and Women’s Education Selection Process
An independent international jury of 5 experts will access the nominations. They assess the nominations based on three factors: the project’s innovation, impact, and sustainability.
The nomination has to be submitted in French or English via the online application portal ( https://unesco.org/gwe). However, this online portal is only available to the National Commissions for UNESCO/Permanent Delegations to UNESCO and NGOs that are official partners. Hence, applicants should forward their applications to the Indian National Commission for Corporations with UNESCO (INCCU) by 30th April 2024.
Based on the Jury recommendations, the Director-General of UNESCO will announce the beneficiaries on or around 11 October 2024.
