Dear Shivani,

I am writing to tell you about a fantastic workshop I recently attended on 19 December 2023 – ‘Improving Speaking Skills in German’. The workshop was led by Mr. Palash Bhattacharya, a former student of Somerville School and current M.Sc. student in Computational Mathematics at the University of Passau, Bavaria, Germany.

The session focused on a unique approach. Instead of solely drilling grammar and vocabulary, Mr. Bhattacharya provided an immersive experience of German student life. He shared fascinating insights into daily life in Germany such as popular cuisine and traditional festivals. This approach brought the language to life, making it more engaging and relatable.

The interactive format was another highlight. Mr. Bhattacharya encouraged our participation through group discussions and activities, which fostered a lively and stimulating learning environment. Also, a fun quiz at the end allowed us to test our knowledge gained throughout the workshop, adding a touch of friendly competition.

Overall, the workshop was incredibly valuable. I learned about practical German speaking skills and gained a deeper understanding of the culture and everyday life in Germany. This has motivated me to continue learning and striving for fluency. I think you would have enjoyed the engaging format and practical tips offered in the workshop.

I hope we can catch up soon and discuss this further. Do let me know if you are interested in learning more about German or upcoming workshops!

Love and warmth,
Vaishnavi

Dearest Aashna,

I am writing to you with such excitement after attending a truly enriching experience – a pottery workshop! You know I have always been fascinated by the idea of creating something beautiful with my own hands and this workshop was the perfect opportunity to explore that.

It was held at a cozy studio filled with the calming scent of clay and the rhythmic movement of the potter’s wheel. I went there with my colony friends, which made the atmosphere even more delightful. We had an amazing instructor who patiently guided us through the process of pottery making. He started with the basics of kneading the clay and centering it on the wheel.

At first, the clay felt unfamiliar and a bit challenging to control. But with each attempt, I felt myself gaining confidence and understanding how to shape it according to my vision. It was truly a therapeutic experience, focusing solely on the present moment and feeling a sense of accomplishment as my creation took form.

Though some of our pieces might not become award-winning pottery, the laughter, shared experiences, and the satisfaction of creating something ourselves made it an unforgettable afternoon.

I cannot wait to share my creation with you once it’s fired and glazed! Perhaps we can even plan a visit to a pottery studio together sometime soon.

Love,
Shantanu

Dearest Roman,

I just had the most fascinating experience at a shoemaking workshop last weekend! Remember how I was telling you about wanting to learn how to make my shoes? Well, I finally took the plunge and it was even more incredible than I imagined.

The workshop was held at a cosy little studio run by a talented cobbler who has been crafting shoes for decades.  We started by learning about the different types of leather and tools used in shoemaking. It was fascinating to see the raw materials and understand the process that goes into creating something we wear every day.

Then, the real fun began! We got hands-on experience with cutting the leather, hammering it into shape, and even stitching the pieces together. It was surprisingly challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. The instructor was incredibly patient and helpful, guiding us through every step and answering all our questions.

By the end of the workshop, I had managed to create a simple pair of leather sandals! They are not perfect, but the sense of accomplishment was amazing. I cannot wait to wear them and tell everyone I made them myself. I know you are always up for trying new things, so I highly recommend checking out a shoemaking workshop if you get the chance. You can also tell me what exciting adventures you have been up to!

Yours Truly,
Rupam
