‘Hello and welcome to everyone present here. Today, I stand before you to present one of the world’s most debated topics: Women’s Empowerment. A ‘woman’ plays multiple roles. She is a daughter, a sister, a mother, an educator, and a caregiver, and she forms the backbone of families and communities. Understanding the importance of women’s empowerment and their role in shaping the future is very important.’

‘On March 8, the entire world observes International Women’s Day. We offer gifts, sweets, and flowers to our female friends, sisters, employees, and others. But, is this what women’s empowerment is about? The answer is no. Women empowerment simply means recognising women’s inherent worth, abilities, and potential. It sounds very simple, yet we have failed to achieve it. Can’t we create an environment where women can freely pursue their dreams and express themselves without fear of discrimination or oppression?’

‘In 1910, the idea for International Women’s Day was tabled at the International Conference for Working Women in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1917, women started protests in Russia, where they were demanding bread and peace. During India’s freedom struggle, Mahatma Gandhi advocated the idea of educating women and encouraging their active participation in movements.’

‘It’s 2024, and women still fight for the most basic rights. Many countries prohibit abortion, where they are not allowed to make decisions about their bodies, and are denied access to healthcare, and contraception, Motherhood is forced on her and no exception is made even in cases of rape or danger to their health.’

‘Women need their rights more than ever. They must be offered opportunities for education, social progress, and innovation in an equal way as men are. When a woman is empowered, she invests in her family, community, and society. Women are agents of social change. They can drive positive transformations in society and can help break the cycle of poverty, inequality, and injustice.’

‘How will the world achieve gender equality if women do not have access to education? They are not allowed to work, and, how will we have policies for women if they don’t have a say in politics? According to the UN Women, there is a ‘Right to Equality’. On paper, we have the ‘Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women’, but in reality, women are discriminated against both at home and at work. 

‘Women empowerment talks about equal pay for equal work for everyone. Amnesty International says that women are paid 77% of what men earn. We need greater transparency, strong legislation and enforcement mechanisms, and awareness of key challenges, we can help women receive equal pay for equal work.’

‘Women empowerment is a human rights issue. We are the future of this world and we have the power to change it for the betterment of everyone. At last, I would like to conclude by saying a Chinese proverb, ‘Women hold up half the sky.’
