Rennes 1 and Rennes 2 are the two universities which form a part of The Academy of Rennes in France. These universities were bifurcated and Rennes 1 came into existence in the year 1969. It traces its history back to the University of Nantes(1460) of which it is a direct predecessor. When the University of Brittany was started, many departments of Brittany University were relocated to Rennes in the 18th century. At present around 29,000 students are pursuing various undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD courses in the university. It employs around 1800 teaching faculty and another 1700 other staff. The University of Rennes 1 is a multidisciplinary, research based university which puts thrust on four major areas : Life and Health Sciences, Mathematics and ICT; Humanities and Social Sciences, and Material Sciences. It was ranked in 301-350 for Chemistry subject in the QS 2020 World Rankings. Today, the university has 10 departments, 2 Engineering and Management schools and a scientific observatory. Lying at the confluence of the Ille and Vilaine rivers, Rennes was recently declared the best city to live in, after Paris in France by the L’Express magazine. Known for its half timbered houses, the city has close to around 73,000 student population.
