Missouri S&T is knowns for its engineering School and offers degrees in information technology and science, social sciences, business and management systems, technology, arts, and humanities. It was established as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy and was the first technology school that was built on the west side of the Mississippi River. It was basically set up to utilize the Morrill Land-Grand Acts. In 2015 it was ranked at the 5th position by Business Insider in the "Most Underrated Colleges in America". It was ranked 89th and 61st in "Best Doctorate Engineering Programs in the US" and "Best Graduate Engineering Schools" respectively by US News and World Report 2018. They also ranked the university at 82nd in 2019 Best Graduate Engineering Schools. The school also has a Student Design and Experiential Learning Center that was established in 2000 with the objective of supporting various student teams belonging to varied disciplines. It expanded its vision to provide dynamic learnings and provide the digital teams with resources for various projects. It also operated an on-campus Nuclear Reactor for training, research and educational purposes.
