Founded in 1964, Edinburgh Napier University is a public university for higher education in Edinburgh, Scotland. Established as Napier Technical College, the college started with 800 students enrolled for programs like cabinet making, chemistry, engineering, and boat building. It got the university status in the year 1992 as Napier University. The college name was changed four times before it finally got its current name in 2009. Named after John Napier, the designer of the decimal point and logarithms, the university is affiliated with MillionPlus. The Edinburgh Napier University ranks #801 -1000 by QS World University Rankings and #501- 600 in World University Rankings 2022 by Times Higher Education.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Edinburgh Napier University has three campuses: Sighthill, Merchiston, and Craiglockhart. The Sighthill Campus serves over 5,000 students and faculty of the Schools of Applied Sciences and Health & Social Care. Amenities include life-like hospital wards, a clinical skills suite, sports science labs, and a sports centre. The Craiglockhart Campus is home to the law and business schools and buildings of Craiglockhart Hydropathic Hospital. It also includes an extensive library, two lecture auditoria, language, and multimedia labs. University's third campus in Merchiston houses the Schools of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment, Arts and Creative Industries. It also incorporates a 500-seater Computing Centre, a computer games lab, a newsroom, TV and radio studios, and State-of-the-art music studios. The university library provides a wealth of hard and soft copy materials for teaching, learning, and research. The Edinburgh Napier University offers more than 153 undergraduate, 162 graduate programs as well as graduate research opportunities.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

Edinburgh Napier University generates about £8.82 for the UK economy for every pound they receive from the Scottish Funding Council. University researchers have helped to create a new world-class centre of excellence for Scottish mountain biking, conserved Kenyan tropical forests and Brazilian tidal crabs, contributed to the battle against cybercrime, and explored tourism's impact on social change. Through their work, they are making tangible differences every day to cardiovascular healthcare, sustainable building, modern policing practice, and the future of artificial intelligence. They have an aim to achieve a net-zero carbon by 2030 at the latest and have made sustainability an integral part of the university's strategic plan. The notable alumni are John Andrew Barrett, former Scottish Liberal Democrat MP, Jayne Baxter, Labor party politician and Jim Dobbin, English Labor MP.

The Edinburgh Napier University values diversity in all its dimensions. The University has more than 13,900 student enrolments of which about 10,200 are undergraduate students, about 3,600 are postgraduates with more than 800 faculty within the premises. They have more than 8,000 students in total as international students hailing from all over the world on the campus. The male to female ratio is 46:54 at the Edinburgh Napier University making it a fairly gender-balanced university.
