History, Affiliations and Rankings

The roots of the University of Windsor date back to September, 1857, when its predecessor institution Assumption College welcomed the first cohort of students. It was in 1963 that the University of Windsor became south-western Ontario’s first autonomous degree-granting institution. Since then, the University has witnessed massive growth, not only in terms of academic offerings but also in student enrollments and the campus, with nearly 16,000 students studying full-time and part-time with Windsor. This public research University in Canada has affiliations with Universities Canada (AUCC), the International Association of Universities (IAU), the Council of Ontario Universities (COU), the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences and other national academic bodies. The University also has strategic affiliations with Canterbury College and Iona College. Globally, the University holds a reputation par excellence by ranking #1111 in USN Best Global Universities, #701-750 in QS World University Rankings and #601-800 in THE World University Rankings for the year 2022. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Located on the banks of the Detroit River, the UWindsor campus is at the intersection of the Windsor-Detroit metropolitan area and only minutes away from North America’s busiest international border crossing. Apart from this main campus, the University has a downtown campus amidst heritage buildings which house the University’s School of Creative Arts, the School of Social Work and the Center for Executive and Professional Education, that are based in the historic Windsor Star Building. The Visual Arts and Music programs have also moved to the Armories in the downtown campus. In all, UWindsor offers 190 Undergraduate programs, 65 graduate degree options and 6 Professional programs across 9 Faculties. With UWindsor, you can select your course based on your personality traits! So, if you have, say an Artistic or Enterprising personality type, the University will have the perfect set of courses suited for you. A breadth of study areas are on-offer at UWindsor, starting from Business and Engineering, to Law, Human Kinetics, Arts and Humanities, and several more. 

Accomplishments and Alumni

In 2012, the University of Windsor opened its Center for Engineering Innovation, a $112 million-worth of infrastructure with world-class facilities. Further, the St. Denis Center for Sports and Athletics at UWindsor’s main campus features a FIFA-approved artificial turf surface along with a seating space for 10,000 spectators. In its commitment to materialize academic knowledge for the welfare of the community, UWindsor has delivered 1.2 million worth hours of service to the Windsor-Essex communities. Also, Forbes Magazine names UWindsor as Canada’s Best Employers for 2021. A student-focused research University, Windsor invests in the career development of the students through its Career Development and Experiential Learning services. Nearly 1,45,000 graduates call the University of Windsor their alma mater. Some of the notable names amongst them are - Sergio Marchionne (CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), Navdeep Bains (Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry of Canada), Tessa Virtue (Retired Canadian Ice Dancer), Amanda Tapping (British-Canadian Actress known for playing Samantha Carter in Stargate TV Series) and Peter Robinson (British-Canadian Crime Writer). 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The University of Windsor has a student population of 16,000+ where 23% of the students are international students coming from 100 countries across the globe. The classroom strength at UWindsor is less, meaning that students share personalized relationships with the faculty. A diverse campus community, the University of Windsor has 17 Athletic teams including a women’s basketball team, that compete for provincial and national championships. The students are typically called “Lancers.” In addition, the University has 100+ student clubs, academic societies and organizations. As such, there is something to engage everyone in every corner of the campus.
