History, Affiliations and Rankings

Established in 1861, the University of Washington is a public institute in Seattle, America. The institute is one of the best public institutes to study in the nation. In 1895, the University shifted to a new campus, Denny Hall. In 1990, the University began two new campuses in Bothell and Tacoma. The University of Washington has academic affiliations with the Association of American Universities (AAU), Universities Research Association, APRU (the Association of Pacific Rim Universities), University of the Arctic (UArctic), Space-grant, and Sea-grant. The University of Washington ranks #29 in World University Rankings by Times Higher Education 2022 and #80 in World University Rankings by QS.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The University of Washington has three campuses in Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma. The main campus is situated on the banks of Portage and Union bays where there is a mesmerizing view of  Cascade Range on the east and there are the Olympic Mountains on the west. The Seattle campus has Redsquare which is near the major landmarks buildings - the Suzzalo Building and Statue of George Washington. The University of Washington offers numerous bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. programs. The institute through its 140 departments offers specializations including, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Environment and Design, Family and Consumer Sciences, Pharmacy, Public Health, Veterinary Medicine, Arts and Sciences, Journalism and Mass Communication, Ecology, and Law.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

According to Greene’s Guide, the University of Washington has been stated as the Public Ivy. The University of Washington has the largest federal funding among the public universities. The institute has the first high-power underwater cabled observatory in the United States through its School of Oceanography. The institute alumni have about 21 Noble Prize laureates and various Pulitzer Prize Awardees, Fulbright, Rhodes, and Marshall Scholars. The notable alumni include, Bill Gates, Founder of Microsoft, Patrick M. Shanahan, United States Secretary of Defense, Tom Foley, 49th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Michael P. Anderson, NASA Astronaut, and Space Shuttle Columbia disaster crew member, Sally Jewell, 51st United States Secretary of the Interior and former CEO of REI, and Joe Sutter, head of the Boeing 747 design team. 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The University of Washington have over 54,000 students out of which more than 33,000 are undergraduate, and about 17,000 are postgraduates. They have about 17% international students on-campus while 33% of students belong to the minority group. In 2006, the institute launched Husky Promise, to promote equal academic opportunity. The institute also has the most diverse student body in the nation. The University of Washington honours the diverse perspectives while creating a welcoming atmosphere and enhancing opportunities. The male-to-female ratio is 44:56 at the institute. The visiting companies at the institute are Nintendo, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte, and others.
