Established in 1819, The University of Virginia located in Charlottesville, Virginia is a public research university. The University was founded by Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, the university is known for the student run honor code, its historic foundations and secret societies. The University is home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site i.e. Jefferson's Academical Village, and is Virginia's flagship university. The original architecture and course structure was designed and conceived by Jefferson himself, it one of the first American South University to be elected to research driven Association of American Universities. The University offers more than 121 majors organized across eight undergraduate colleges and three professional schools, The campus is spread across 1682 acres and is ranked among the most beautiful collegiate grounds of the U.S., besides the main campus the university has maintained 2913 acres at Morven Farm, southeast of the city and 562 acres at the UVA Research park, north of the campus. Up until 1972, the university also managed University of Mary Washington, Northern Virginia and George Mason University. The university's faculty was credited with two of the ten Scientific breakthroughs by the journal, Science, in 2015. The athletes of UVA are called Cavaliers, the University boasts of their many achievements among them are- they top the Atlantic Coast Conference in NCAA Championship's men's team with 20 and the women's NCAA titles ranking an overall second,the men's basketball team won NCAA Tournament Championship in 2019, the college also prides itself at winning in the following NCAA Championships- NCAA Lacrosse Championship, NCAA Tennis Championships, College World Series and College Cup.
