The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro is the first higher education institution in Northern Portugal, initially known as Vila Real Polytechnic Institute which contributed towards the development of the regions surrounding the university. The intense notable activities in the disciplines of technology, research, and teaching within a decade of its establishment upgraded the institute with the status of a public university in 1986. The university offers bachelor’s, master’s, PhD, integrated master’s degree in conjunction with postgraduate and professional higher technical courses across 5 schools namely: School of Agrarian and Veterinary Sciences, School of Health, School of Human and Social Sciences, School of Life Sciences and Environment and School of Science and Technology. International Students can pursue courses at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro provided they fulfil the B1 Portuguese language level. Currently, the youngest university of the country is a reference at the national and international levels which houses plenty of facilities and modern amenities within the eco-campus. The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro Social Action Services, ActiveGym and UTAD sports project in association with AAUTAD promotes the spirit of sportsmanship among the students by providing numerous sports facilities at par excellence and encourages students to bring out their best in competitive events.
