History, Affiliations and Rankings

Established in 1841, the University of South Wales was formed in 2013 from the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport. The University entered in an alliance with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, where a joint statement declared that both the universities would be working together with the common aim of strengthening the Wales community. This joint statement was signed in 2020. This University is affiliated with the University Alliance and the Universities UK. The University of South Wales also has partnerships with the Welsh Institute of Digital Information (WIDI) for training Engineers in the ropes of the digital world, and with Screen Alliance Wales and BadWolf Studios to provide valuable experience to the next generation of film-makers studying at the University. The Times Higher Education ranked South Wales in the bracket #1001-1200 in the World University Rankings 2022

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The University of South Wales has three connected campuses, located in Cardiff, Newport and Pontypridd. The Cardiff campus is home to the Faculty of Creative Industries and offers a few courses from the Faculty of Business and Society. The Newport campus provides courses in the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education. The largest campus at Pontypridd is architectured in three parts, namely Treforest, which hosts the School of Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics and Graduate courses; Glyntaff, which deals with Nursing and the Tyn y Wern, which is the location of the University Sports Park. The world-class Sports Park features a FIFA standard 3G Football Pitch, while the other campuses offer just the right balance of studying and socializing spaces, amidst spectacular natural sights. The University of South Wales offers around 500+ courses in total, at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, across 40+ disciplines. In addition, research degrees, short-term courses, foundation routes and part-time study options are also available at the University of South Wales.

Accomplishments and Alumni

The University of South Wales has carried out valuable research projects, from Sciences and Engineering to Literature and Performing Arts, that have created positive impact locally as well as globally. For instance, research carried out by the USW Professor, Dr. Mike Chick along with the Welsh Refugee Council has successfully improved access to English language education for forced migrants in south Wales and has also influenced the government policy for the same! Further, 95% of USW graduates secure employment or are enrolled in further studies within 6 months of graduation. USW graduates were also involved in the production of the Netflix Series “Sex Education,” Season 2 and the BBC Drama, “His Dark Materials.” Since its establishment the University has produced some of the most successful people in Wales and globally. Its alumni list contains people from every domain, be it artists, authors, businessmen, actors, politicians, or celebrated names from other fields. Some of them include Gareth Evans (Film Director and Screenwriter), Kevin Brennan (Politician), Carole Bromley (British Poet and Creative Writing Tutor at the University of York), Asif Kapadia (Academy, BAFTA and Grammy award winning Director and Filmmaker) and Rupert Moon (Rugby Player).
