Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg  founded in 1973 aim is to find answers to modern problems with effective and efficient personnel research and development. It is one of the largest and most renowned educational institutions in northwest Germany and specialises in interdisciplinary and sustainable development studies and renewable energy studies with a focus on solar and wind energy. In 2012, the university founded the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and introduced a 12-semester medical degree, which concludes with the state examination as a prerequisite for practising medicine. The new faculty is part of the European Medical School Oldenburg-Groningen (EMS), a cooperation between the University of Oldenburg, the University of Groningen, Netherlands, and local hospitals. It is affiliated with the EUA. It is ranked #851 in US News Best Global Universities, #338 in Best Global Universities in Europe and #50 in Best Global Universities in Germany. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Students can discover the wide range of cultural and leisure activities offered by the university and the city of Oldenburg or get involved in other ways. There are theatres, museums, libraries, art associations, etc. at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. The University campus offers many opportunities to keep fit and take part in sports activities such as swimming, skating, belly dancing or jokeiba. There are several student councils in which you can get actively involved. At the university, there is also another grouping for religion and belief, politics, economics and law. They also have a Buddy Program that pairs a local German student with an international student. The presence of a language cafe for practising foreign languages is another great initiative on campus and one learns German just as well as the native German-speaking student. The university offers 95 courses. Some of the courses offered here are Computer Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Engineering, Technology, Business, Geography, Arts, Sports Sciences, Sciences, History, Social Studies, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Biology, Law, Physics, and Microbiology etc.

Accomplishments and Alumni

The first major cross-border collaboration started in 1980 with the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Since then, a particularly far-reaching partnership has developed, in which several courses are offered jointly by the two universities. The university participates in the ERASMUS program, an association for student exchange in Europe. It maintains cooperation agreements with 105 universities in 44 countries. Some of the notable alumni are Hans-Jürgen Appelrath (professor of computer science and information technology), Jürgen Gmehling (professor of technical and industrial chemistry), and Bettina Meyer (professor, Antarctic researcher). 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

The university cooperates and works closely with 200 other universities that prepare more than 15,000 students for professional life. The university is one of the youngest universities in Germany. A total of 15,899 students are enrolled at the university, including around 1,209 international students from more than 50 countries. In 2020-21, 4,142 students were enrolled at the university, including 294 international students.
