History, Affiliation and Ranking

Prince Albert, Duke of York, who subsequently became King George VI, laid the foundation stone for University College Hull in 1927 in the UK. Hull City Council and two local benefactors, Thomas Ferens and G F Grant provided land for the college's construction. With 39 students, the first 14 departments in pure sciences and the arts opened a year later. The university was granted the right to offer its own degrees to students under the Royal Charter of 1954. As a result, it became Yorkshire's 3rd university and England's 14th university. It is now regarded as one of the greatest research and educational institutions in the world. The university has also been recognized as a ‘younger civic university’. The motto of the university is Lampada Ferens, which translates as ‘carrying the light of learning. The university is affiliated with Global U8, Utrecht Network, Universities UK and EUA. In the QS World University Rankings 2022, the University of Hull is ranked between #651-700 and as per THE World University Rankings, the university ranks #601-800. Furthermore, the University of Hull also ranks #=70 in the Complete University Guide University League Tables 2022 and #53 in the Guardian's the best UK universities 2022 – rankings. 

Infrastructure, Campus and Courses 

The main campus of the university is located in the residential district of North Hull on Cottingham Road. It also has a small campus in Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast. The main campus houses their award-winning Allam Medical Building, Brynmor Jones Library, Middleton Hall, and an incredible view from the 7th floor of the library. The Scarborough campus is attended by approximately 2,000 students as they offer courses in Marine Biology, Digital Media, Music Technology, Theatre Studies, and Tourism Management in the campus. Some of the top faculties include the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Faculty of Arts, Culture and Education, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Business, Law and Politics

Accomplishments and Alumni

Hull has been awarded the Queen’s Award for Technological Achievement for research in liquid crystal technology. In 2014, the National Research Excellence Framework (REF) judged 62% of their research to be internationally excellent. UH has prominent alumni in the field of politics, academia, journalism and drama. Some of the most famous alumni of the University of Hull include John Prescott (Deputy Prime Minister of the UK 1997-2007), vaccinologist Dame Sarah Gilbert (project Lead of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine) and John McCarthy (Film Director).
