History, Affiliations, and Rankings
The University of British Columbia was established in the year of 1908. It is one of the oldest and most popular universities in Canada. Prior to the establishment of the University of British Columbia, higher education in British Columbia was given by denominational institutions connected with McMaster University Hamilton, University Of Toronto, and Mcgill University. The university received the core of its initial personnel and a basic curriculum in Arts, Science, and Engineering as a result of its affiliation with McGill. McGill's Victoria College in Victoria became an associate of the university in 1920, and honours courses, extension programmes, and summer sessions were created. UBC moved to its current location on the Vancouver campus in 1925. The attraction point of the university is that in the university, military training is compulsory for every student. In World War II, more than 3,000 students of the university were enrolled in the military forces in 1944-45, and in 1947-48, more than 9,374 students enrolled in the military forces. The University of British Columbia is recognised in international university rankings for its teaching and research quality, as well as its worldwide impact: a place where people shape a better world. Furthermore, UBC was placed #37, #42, and #46 internationally and #2, #2, and #3 domestically in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022, Shanghai Ranking Academic Ranking of World Universities 2021, and QS World University Rankings 2022, respectively.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The university has two campuses, one in Vancouver and the other in the Okanagan, both of which are located in Point Grey. The university has a serene view surrounded by the sea, mountains, woodland, and city. The main campus is located in Vancouver and has major centres like the Chan Centre for Performing Arts, Centre for Interactive Research in Sustainability, UBC Welcome Centre, and UBC Centre for Plant Research. The campus has four major departments that are found at the campus: Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Law, and Faculty of Science. The university offers a wide range of courses under undergraduate, postgraduate, joint academic, exchange, and distance programs in a wide range of fields, including Applied Science, Architecture, Law, Medicine, Dentistry, Philosophy, Anthropology and Ancient Culture, Religion and Ethnicity. The courses are led by experts and professionals who guide students with theoretical and practical knowledge.
Accomplishments and Alumni
The University of British Columbia is a global centre for research and teaching, consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the world. The University is the recipient of awards like The CFPC Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Program Award, Royal College Accredited CPD Provider Innovation Award, and Family Medicine Forum Award for Excellence in Research. Based on its contributions via research, outreach, and stewardship, UBC ranks second in Canada overall and 13th internationally for 2021, out of more than 1,115 participating universities from 94 countries. UBC also ties for first in the world for industry and innovation impact. This encompasses the university’s patents, 233 companies spun off from UBC research, and research income from industry. Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
UBC has a total of 48,722 students enrolled. Undergraduate students make up 36% of full-time students and 64% of part-time students. UBC conducts an ethnicity survey of new students in order to obtain additional demographic information about its students. Among the total number of students, there are more than 16,000 international students as well. International students are similar to domestic students in terms of demographics, with 44% being Chinese, Japanese, or Korean and 37% speaking English as a first language. Furthermore, the United States accounts for 19% of all overseas students, closely followed by China at 15%. The campus size of 988 acres makes the university one of the biggest universities in Canada.
