Southwest Texas State Normal School first opened its doors in 1903, after being approved by the Texas legislature in 1899. They've changed their name a few times over the years, from Southwest Texas State Normal College in 1918 to Texas State University-San Marcos in 2003 to Texas State University in 2013. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the regional accrediting agency for eleven states in the southeastern United States, including Texas, has granted Texas State University accreditation. The last time Texas State went through reaccreditation was in 2010. The Texas State University is ranked #201-250 in the QS US University Ranking 2022. It is ranked #299-#391 in National Universities, #132 in Top Performers on Social Mobility (tie) and #156-#209 in Top Public Schools as per the reports by US News and World Report. 

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

Texas State University has two campuses, one in San Marcos and the other in Round Rock. The majority of the undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Education are provided at Texas State University's main campus in San Marcos, Texas. The Education Building, Academic Services Building North and South, and Jowers Centre are the four buildings that house the College of Education's departments and offices on the San Marcos campus. Its Round Rock Campus offers teacher preparation programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as graduate programs in educational leadership and counselling. Students who attend classes on the Round Rock Campus must meet the same entrance standards as students who attend classes on the San Marcos Campus. Students can pick from over 200 bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degree programs ranging from biology to music to business to geography and more. Beyond the classroom, each student receives the individualized assistance and opportunity they require to flourish.

Accomplishments and Alumni 

The University is ranked #1 in Texas for helping at-?risk students graduate by the THECB three-year average data. It is recently recognized as the following: The International Centre for Supplemental Instruction names TXST’s tutoring program “Exemplary”, U.S. News ranks TXST among Best Online Master's in Nursing programs, Princeton Review names TXST one of the Best Green Colleges for 2022, Newsweek names TXST among America's Best Online Learning Schools for 2022 and Hispanic Outlook positions TXST 4th for parks, recreation, leisure, fitness & kinesiology degrees for 2021. The university has a prestigious network of 214,000 alumni all across the globe. Some of the notable alumni of the university are Lyndon B. Johnson, 36th U.S. President, John Sharp, Former Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts and Tomás Rivera, Author.

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

Texas State University has a total undergraduate enrollment of 33,193 students (fall 2020), with 41% male students and 59 percent female students. Minority enrollment has steadily increased in recent years with Hispanic enrollment counting for over 35% of total enrollment and overall minority enrollment over 50%. The ratio of female to male students at Texas State University has remained fairly consistent over the past several years, with female students slightly outnumbering males.
